Form 1099-NEC Independent Contractors

Beginning with payments made in 2026, the new law raises the threshold for information reporting on certain business payments from $600 to $2,000.

It should save rescues a few dollars by cutting down the number of 1099s issued.

All of us CPAs know and appreciate that you are out saving so many lives but we are getting closer to the November 15th last date to file your 2024 Form 990 before being considered a late filing. The IRS will automatically send your rescue notices with obscenely high penalty and fee demands. Then you have to call us in a panic to get them abataed. The IRS will usually but not always write them off but why make life so hard? Get your CPA your info now while we are in slow season and get your 990 crossed off your list.

IRS Form 990 for 2024 is due May 15th. The IRS happily will give you a 6 month extension by filing Form 8868.

There is a new scam where you get a phony invoice from a scammer. The one I saw had an incomplete address for Quickbooks

It is going to be harder and harder to classify people as Independent Contractors. Please consider their 6 points in the article before not classifying them as an employee.

Just another heads up to rescues. Accounting fees are going up and if you are a small rescue, you may be losing your accounting firm.

Auditors and tax accountants are moving on—or considering quitting the profession—citing other available options at a time of an already widening shortage.
