Thank you to our friends at EGC Productions for inviting members of our team to an inspirational evening with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra!

The concert, "Censored Voices: Silent No More" featured music composed by Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Gubaidulina, who lived and worked under censorship, yet contributed some of the most important classical music ever written. According to EGC, "Their work was often suppressed, yet they, and their music, endured and now speaks with important urgency. Freedom of artistic expression is fundamental to civic health, democratic identity and the vitality of free societies."

Homeowners, do you know about the Augusta Rule?

Originally created to protect the residents in Augusta, Georgia, who rented out their homes to attendees of the annual Masters Tournament, the Augusta Rule dates back to the 1970s. At that time, residents were interested in avoiding tax complications while renting their homes and profiting from it.

Today, the rule applies to any taxpayer who owns a home in the US. This rule lets homeowners rent out their properties for up to 14 days per year without legally having to report the rental income on their federal tax return.

Given its potential tax benefit, this rule is not only attractive but also particularly useful for homeowners who reside in small cities that host big events.

Contributions to charitable organizations may be deducted up to 50 percent of adjusted gross income. But contributions to certain private foundations, veterans organizations, fraternal societies, and cemetery organizations are limited to 30 percent adjusted gross income.

ALERT: Many accounting firms are seeing scams involving the CP53E notices that the IRS has been sending to taxpayers when they do not provide their direct deposit information.

While the IRS is continuing to send out refund checks, it is also sending out the CP53E notices asking taxpayers to provide bank account information to expedite processing.

Fraudsters have taken notice and are sending out fake notices.

In a recent House Ways and Means Congressional alert, it was advised that a CP53E notice may not be legitimate if it includes a QR code or clickable link directing taxpayers to “verify,” “activate” or “unfreeze” a refund.
