💡 Understanding Taxes: Federal, State & Local

Ever wondered where your taxes actually go?

🇺🇸 Federal Taxes
These are paid to the U.S. government. They help fund major services like:
✔️ National defense
✔️ Social Security & Medicare
✔️ Education programs
✔️ Federal infrastructure

🏙️ State Taxes
These vary depending on the state you live in. They are used for:
✔️ Public schools
✔️ State highways & transportation
✔️ Healthcare programs
✔️ Local government support

📍 Local Taxes (City/County)
These taxes stay within your community and support:
✔️ Police & fire departments 🚓🚒
✔️ Public schools 📚
✔️ Road maintenance 🛣️
✔️ Community services

✨ Why it matters:
Understanding where your taxes go helps you stay informed, make better financial decisions, and avoid surprises.

👉 Taxes are not just payments… they are your contribution to the community you live in.

💡 What Are Taxes… and Why Do They Matter?

Taxes are not just payments we “have to make”… they’re how we all contribute to building the life around us.
From the roads we drive on 🚗 to the schools our kids attend 📚, taxes help fund it all.
If you earn, spend, or own… taxes are part of your financial journey.

Here are the 3 main types of taxes in the U.S. you should know:

🔹 Income Tax
This is what you pay on the money you earn. Whether you’re an employee or a business owner, you may owe taxes at the federal and sometimes state or local level.
👉 That’s why filing your tax return every year is so important, it keeps you compliant and in control.

🔹 Sales Tax
Every time you shop, you’re contributing. This tax is added to the price of goods or services, and businesses collect it on behalf of the government.

🔹 Property Tax
Own a home or real estate? This tax is based on your property’s value, and it helps fund local services like schools, safety, and infrastructure in your community.

✨ Understanding taxes is not just for accountants… it’s for anyone who wants to be financially smart and confident.

If you’ve ever felt confused about taxes, you’re not alone, but the good news is, you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.

🚨 Tax Day Is Coming, April 15! Are You Ready?

The deadline to file your federal taxes with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is April 15, and waiting until the last minute can cost you more than just stress.

Here’s what you need to know:

✔️ Filing late = penalties
If you don’t file on time, the penalty can be much higher than if you simply can’t pay the full amount.

✔️ Filing late and paying late are NOT the same
Even if you can’t pay everything, file your return to reduce penalties.

✔️ Need more time?
You can request an extension, but remember:
An extension gives you more time to FILE, not more time to PAY.

✔️ Common mistakes I see every year:
– Missing W-2s or 1099s
– Forgetting a dependent
– Using wrong bank information
– Waiting until April 14 to start 😅

👉 Organization saves money.
👉 Preparation reduces stress.

Don’t wait until the pressure builds. If you haven’t started yet, this is your sign.

Have you filed already, or are you still preparing?🤔

📊 What Is a P&L (Profit & Loss) Statement, and Why Every Business Owner Should Understand It

Many business owners look at their bank balance and think that’s the whole story.
But your bank balance doesn’t tell you if your business is truly profitable.

That’s where the Profit & Loss statement (P&L) comes in.

A P&L shows your business performance over a specific period (monthly, quarterly, or yearly).
It answers one simple but powerful question:
👉 Did your business make money or lose money?

🔹 What you can understand when you read a P&L:

✅ Revenue: How much money your business earned
✅ Expenses: Where your money is going (rent, software, payroll, ads, etc.)
✅ Net Profit or Loss: What’s left after expenses
✅ Cost control: Are expenses growing faster than income?
✅ Business health: Is your business improving or struggling over time?

🔹 Why it matters:
A clean and accurate P&L helps you:
• Make smarter decisions
• Set realistic pricing
• Prepare for taxes
• Apply for loans or funding
• Stop guessing and start planning

📌 Tip: If you don’t understand your P&L, you’re running your business blind, even if sales look good.

As a bookkeeper/accounting professional, my goal is not just to record numbers, but to help business owners understand their numbers and use them to grow with confidence.

💬 Do you review your P&L monthly, or only at tax time?

📄 What Is Form 1095-C?

Many people panic when they see Form 1095-C in the mail 😅
Let’s clear it up — it’s NOT an income form.

Form 1095-C is a health insurance form sent by employers.

Here’s what it means 👇

✔️ It shows whether your employer offered you health insurance
✔️ It confirms if the coverage met Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements
✔️ It helps the IRS verify health coverage — not your income

Do you need it to file your taxes?

👉 No, in most cases

You do NOT attach it to your tax return

Just keep it for your records

The IRS already receives a copy from your employer

Who gets Form 1095-C?

You may receive it if:

You worked full-time for a company with 50+ employees

OR you were enrolled in your employer’s health insurance plan

Important to know ⚠️

This form is often confused with:

1095-A → Marketplace (Obamacare) plans

1095-B → Insurance providers

1095-C → Large employers

✨ Bottom line:
Form 1095-C is informational.
It usually does not change your refund or taxes owed.
