Planning for College? Federal Student Loan Changes Are Coming.

Starting with the 2026–27 academic year, new federal student loan rules will change how students and families can finance higher education. Here are a few key changes to know:

• Graduate PLUS loans are being eliminated for new borrowers, with new limits on federal borrowing for graduate and professional students.
• Parent PLUS loans will be capped at $20,000 per year per student, with a $65,000 lifetime limit per student.
• Federal borrowing limits are becoming more restrictive, meaning some students and families may have a larger gap between the cost of college and the amount they can borrow federally.

For families planning for college, these changes make it even more important to look beyond the FAFSA and consider the bigger financial picture. Saving early, comparing net costs, understanding borrowing options, and balancing college savings with other financial goals can all play a role in creating a sustainable plan.

If you’re planning for a child’s education, now may be a good time to revisit your college funding strategy and understand how these changes could affect your family.

Sending your child off to college? There’s more to prepare for than just move-in day.

You’ve probably thought about tuition, textbooks, and health coverage. But there are a couple of other protections worth considering before they head to campus.

1. Tuition Insurance: If your student has to unexpectedly withdraw from school due to a covered reason, tuition insurance may help protect the money you’ve already invested.

2. Renters Insurance: Laptops, phones, jewelry, and other belongings can add up quickly. Renters insurance may help protect your student’s personal property from theft, fire, and other covered losses.

Before move-in day, make sure insurance is on your checklist, too.

Parents spend years preparing their children for college and their careers, but one of the most valuable lessons often isn't taught in the classroom: financial literacy.

Before young adults head to college or begin their first job, it's important they understand the fundamentals of managing money. Learning how to create a budget, build savings, navigate student loans, evaluate employer-sponsored benefits, contribute to a 401(k), and understand health insurance can help them make more informed financial decisions from day one.

These early conversations may seem small, but the habits developed today can shape financial confidence and long-term success for years to come.

What financial lesson do you think every young adult should know before leaving home?
