Who invented bubble gum?

An ACCOUNTANT.

In 1928, Walter Diemer was a 23-year-old accountant at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company in Philadelphia. Chemists had been chasing a workable and not-too-sticky bubble gum for many years, but it was the numbers guy tinkering with recipes in his spare time who finally cracked the formula.

A few of our favorite details:
🎀 It's pink because that was the only food coloring available in the factory that day. Most bubble gum is still pink almost 100 years later.
💰 Dubble Bubble sold for a penny a piece and topped $1.5 million in sales its first year.
📊 Diemer never patented it and never collected a royalty — he said making kids happy around the world was reward enough.

Proof that accountants don't just balance the books — sometimes they change the world.
