Please join us in welcoming Jessica Staton as our new Chief Operating Officer! 🎉

Jessica brings nearly a decade of experience leading operations and technology initiatives in the RIA industry. Her background spans client service, trading, operations, and leadership, which gives her a clear view of how every part of an advisory firm works together for clients.

At CJM, Jessica will oversee the people, processes, and systems behind our day-to-day work. She likes to stay close to that work, and she brings a practical, hands-on approach to building the infrastructure that supports our growth while keeping the level of service our clients count on.

One of her favorite sayings is "Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't." We think that tells you a lot about how she leads.

Outside the office, Jessica volunteers with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, helping children learn to ride. She's a proud University of Louisville grad and loyal Cardinals fan, and she cheers on the Orioles and Washington-area teams too. On a day off, you'll usually find her at the beach or the lake with family and friends.

What are we doing about rising bond yields? We're shortening the duration.

Short-duration bond funds are less sensitive to interest rate changes, so they tend to lose less than longer-term bond funds when rates climb. Right now they also pay about the same income, so we aren't giving up yield to take on less risk.

Bonds fell about 3.5% last quarter. The reason was the 10-year Treasury yield.

It started 2026 around 4.2% and ended September near 5.3%, the highest since 2007. When yields rise, bonds already issued at lower rates lose value.

Small companies took a hit too. Many rely on floating-rate loans, so their borrowing costs rise as soon as rates do.

Q3 delivered the strongest earnings growth in five years, and the market barely moved.

The S&P 500 finished the quarter up about 2%, the Nasdaq about 2.5%, and bonds fell 3.5%. Interest rates were the reason. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped to about 5.3% in September, and the Fed raised rates for the first time since 2023.

Most people sign their estate plan once and file it away. Life doesn't stand still, though, even when the paperwork does.

Adam Abramowitz, an attorney we work with, puts it well: what you wanted when you signed isn't necessarily what you want today, a year from now, or twenty years down the road.

A few things that quietly go out of date without anyone noticing:

– The guardian you picked for your kids back when they were young. Maybe that person isn't around anymore, or your thinking has simply evolved.

– Your power of attorney or medical directive. The person you named may no longer be the right person to make important financial or medical decisions on your behalf.

– Any significant life changes. If you've moved, gotten married, divorced, welcomed another child or grandchild, retired, or simply built more than you had when you signed your documents, any one of those is a good reason to take another look.

– The tax rules. The federal estate tax exemption, for example, increased from $13.99 million in 2025 to $15 million in 2026. Changes like this can affect how your estate is taxed and whether the strategies in your current plan still make sense.

Thirty years ago, Debbie Delardi started at CJM as an assistant to one of our founding partners. This year, we're celebrating three decades of her keeping this office running and the whole team accountable.

Debbie started her career in New York's mortgage banking industry before moving to Northern Virginia in 1991. She joined CJM in 1996, and she's been at the center of this firm ever since, now serving as our Managing Director.

Outside the office, Debbie used to run her own cupcake and wedding cake shop. Parker still talks about the cake she baked for his own wedding years ago. These days she's traded the shop for a garden, and the office gets the benefit all summer with fresh vegetables she brings in to share!

We marked Debbie's actual anniversary back in May, but the whole team wanted the chance to celebrate her properly in person. Thirty years, Debbie. Thank you for every one of them!
