Ball, Shanaman and Tenorio is a full-service, year-round accounting and tax preparation firm serving clients from around the world in three conveniently located offices in southeast Michigan and southwest Florida. Following a corporate accounting c

areer with such companies as Ford Motor Company and Cargill, Inc., Fred Tenorio founded the company in 1988 in Monroe, Michigan. Originally focused on accounting services for small businesses, the company was the first in the Monroe area to introduce electronic filing, and from there its tax practice – with both individuals and businesses – has steadily grown. The success of the business, with expansion to two additional offices in Farmington Hills, MI (2002) and Bonita Springs, FL (2009) is due primarily to the loyalty and referrals of our satisfied customers. At the core of our success is a commitment to personalized service, where each staff member takes the time to get to know new clients and flexible hours are available to all clients, 7 days a week throughout the year (by appointment). The firm also maintains a commitment to continuing education. With a CPA and several Enrolled Agents among the staff, Ball, Shanaman and Tenorio requires each of its tax preparers to attend annual classes to ensure that they are aware of the most current regulations and new opportunities to save money for our clients. The company offers a wide range of services, from expert guidance with complex tax issues such as audits and IRS tax resolution problems, to general accounting, bookkeeping, and new business start-up consulting. The initial consultation with each client is free of charge. Last August, we were most gratified to be named the "Best Accountants" in metropolitan Detroit, from an annual, community-wide "Vote 4 the Best" campaign sponsored by the local NBC TV affiliate, WDIV. Such an accomplishment would not have been possible without our clients taking the time to vote, which reaffirmed their satisfaction with the quality of services we provide.

You’ll probably owe tax on your retirement income — how much depends on factors such as the types of retirement accounts you own and your other income sources. In general, retirees should withdraw funds from any taxable accounts first, tax-deferred accounts second and tax-free accounts last. But different withdrawal strategies may benefit you. The important thing is to start planning before you retire. Call us at (800) 501-7302 for help.

If your C corporation traditionally makes deductible charitable gifts, make sure you know the rules for 2026 donations. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, corporations can only deduct charitable gifts in excess of 1% of the company’s taxable income, with a 10% of income cap. Amounts exceeding the 10% cap can be carried forward — as can amounts that aren’t currently deductible due to the 1% floor — for up to five years. You may want to execute a multiyear charitable deduction strategy if your company’s income varies from year to year. Contact us at (800) 501-7302. We can help by projecting income and other deductions so you can support your community while maximizing long-term tax benefits.

If you’re thinking about financing a new vehicle, you may be able to deduct up to $10,000 per year of interest paid. The deduction is available for certain personal auto loans originated after Dec. 31, 2024 — even if you don’t itemize deductions. Modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) limits apply, and only qualifying vehicles assembled in the U.S. are eligible. Before purchasing, consider whether eligibility for the deduction should factor into your vehicle choice. We can help run the numbers. Call us at (800) 501-7302.

Home renovations can improve a residence’s comfort, functionality, aesthetics and resale value. They might also provide tax benefits. You may be able to deduct mortgage interest on debt used to substantially improve your home. Certain improvements can also increase your tax basis, potentially reducing taxable gain when you sell. Medically necessary modifications may qualify as deductible medical expenses, subject to limits. And if you overlooked claiming now-expired credits for qualifying energy-efficient home improvements you made in 2025, an amended return may be worth considering. Call us at (800) 501-7302 to talk taxes before or after a home renovation.

Do you know the difference between IRS liens and levies? A federal tax lien arises when you fail to pay taxes after receiving an IRS bill or notice. It’s a legal claim against your property, including real estate and other assets, which can affect your ability to secure credit or complete financial transactions. A levy may be the next step if your debt remains unresolved. The IRS can seize assets — such as wages or bank funds — to satisfy the debt. In short, a lien protects the IRS’s interest, while a levy enforces collection. If you receive collection notices, don’t ignore them! Acting quickly can help open the door to resolution options. Call us at (800) 501-7302.

Donating artwork, antiques, collectibles or other tangible personal property that has appreciated in value can produce very different tax results depending on the charity’s use of the item. If the use directly supports the organization’s mission — such as an antique donated to a museum for its collection — you may be able to deduct fair market value. But if the item will be used for another purpose, such as being sold at a fundraising auction, your deduction may be limited to what you originally paid for it. Contact us at (800) 501-7302 before making a donation to discuss your potential deduction and the applicable substantiation requirements.
