👀 You may be used to hearing Profit and Loss...but in the nonprofit accounting world, this report is usually called a Statement of Activities.

📊 The idea is similar, but the way we look at the numbers can be very different. Using classes lets you see Admin, Fundraising, and each Program separately instead of looking at one big total.

👀 Depreciation can lower your taxable income while you own an asset, which sounds great. But there is another side business owners do not always hear about.
⁣
🧾 Every time you take depreciation, you are also reducing the tax basis of that asset. So when you eventually sell it, that lower basis can create a LARGER taxable gain.
⁣
🏠 For example, imagine you buy a rental property for $227,500 and take $48,750 in depreciation. Your adjusted basis is now $178,750. If you later sell it for $247,500, your gain is $68,750, not just the $20,000 increase in value.
⁣
💡 This does not mean depreciation is bad. You received tax deductions while you owned the property. It just means depreciation affects both sides of the story, what happens while you own the asset and what happens when you eventually sell it. And simply skipping depreciation generally does not make the issue disappear because allowable depreciation can still reduce your basis.

😬 Having QuickBooks Online does not automatically mean your books are right. Transactions can be duplicated, expenses can land in the wrong accounts, old balances can carry forward, and reconciliations can get skipped.
