If you're not sure how your financial pieces fit together, you're in good company. Most people build them one at a time — a 401(k) here, a will there, a policy somewhere along the way — as life prompts them to. Nobody sits down and connects them.

That's not a failure. It's just what happens without a coordinating plan.

Every plan looks great on the day it's built. The real test is whether it still works ten or twenty years later, after inflation, a couple of tax law changes, and whatever life throws at you that wasn't in the spreadsheet.

A good financial plan isn't a prediction. It's built to absorb what you can't predict and keep working anyway.

Three questions worth asking about your own plan:
• If inflation ran hotter than expected for the next decade, would it still get you where you're going?
• If tax rates changed significantly, would it need to be rebuilt from scratch, or would it flex?
• If your income were disrupted for a year, is there room for that?

If you answered "I don't know" to any of them, that's common. Most plans are built once around one set of assumptions and never pressure-tested. The plans that hold up are the ones built with room to move.

A new survey from Chase found that 70% of small business owners don't have a formal succession plan in place — even though nearly half expect to step away from their business within the next decade. (Source: Chase Small Business survey, 2026, via Businesswire)

That gap showed up in a different but related way on this week's featured episode on Beyond the Numbers.

Staffing industry consultant Tom Kosnik talked about how the same blind spots that make succession hard — no one besides the founder really managing the numbers, no systems built to outlast the founder — are often what stalls growth years before retirement is even on the table.

If something disrupted your income for a year, does your plan have room for that? Or does it quietly assume everything goes well?

If "I don't know" is the honest answer, you're in the majority. Most plans get built once, around one set of assumptions, and are never pressure-tested against anything else. A plan is meant to be revisited — year after year.
