📬 Did you just open an IRS CP504 Notice? Here is what you need to know before panic sets in.
An IRS CP504 notice is officially titled a Notice of Intent to Levy. In plain English: the IRS is signaling that your tax balance is moving into active enforcement.
If this notice goes unaddressed, the IRS has the legal authority under Internal Revenue Code § 6331(d) to seize state tax refunds and begin procedures to levy bank accounts, garnish wages, and file a public Notice of Federal Tax Lien.
Here are the 4 steps every taxpayer should take immediately:
1. Pay Attention to the 30-Day Window: Ignoring the notice does not make it disappear—it only removes your administrative appeal rights and invites automated enforcement.
2. Have a CPA Pull Your Master Transcripts: Before paying or agreeing to anything, ensure the assessment is accurate. A forensic transcript review identifies misapplied payments, statute expiration dates (CSED), and penalty relief eligibility.
3. Put an Immediate Collection Hold in Place: You do not have to pay the full demand on the spot. Authorized CPA representation can contact IRS Collections to place an immediate hold on enforcement while a structured resolution is prepared.
4. Evaluate Your Statutory Options: Depending on your financial profile, several relief paths exist under the tax code—including formal Installment Agreements, Currently Not Collectible (CNC) hardship status, an Offer in Compromise (OIC), or Penalty Abatement under IRC § 6651.
You don’t have to face IRS Collections alone.
