You’d never skip payroll for your team. You’ve probably never even considered it.

But so many studio owners and wellness business owners do this all the time:
They skip their own paycheck the second things feel tight.

And I get why. Your payroll feels non-negotiable. Rent feels non-negotiable. Vendors feel non-negotiable.

Your pay starts to feel… flexible.

But “flexible” becomes a habit. And over time it costs you more than money:

It drains your energy, builds resentment, and makes the whole business feel less sustainable.

Here’s the shift:

Treat yourself like an employee.

A paycheck that is planned.
A paycheck that is scheduled.
A paycheck that is protected.

Because paying the owner is not a reward for a “good month.”

It’s a requirement for a business that lasts.

If your paycheck has been optional, let’s make it consistent.

Book your free Fiscal Fitness Snapshot and we’ll figure out what’s realistic right now, and how to build a plan that actually works.

In this episode of Behind the Numbers, Shannon sits down with Melissa Urban, co-founder and CEO of Whole30, to discuss her journey from a simple 2009 self-experiment and blog post to building one of the world's most recognized wellness brands.

Melissa shares the operational decisions behind updating a household name, lessons learned from expensive early mistakes, and how the 2020 pandemic forced the company to diversify its revenue streams away from book launches and marketing sponsorships. She also addresses the challenges of navigating consumer price sensitivity and the importance of holding onto your integrity when facing pushback over profitability in the health and wellness space.

Finally, Melissa shares her absolute best piece of advice for every entrepreneur: pay yourself first.

In this episode of Behind the Numbers, we dive deep into the intersection of business strategy and mindset with Vicky Shilling, a business coach dedicated to health and wellness solopreneurs.

Have you ever wondered why two people can follow the exact same practical business advice or strategy, yet walk away with completely different results? Vicky noticed this phenomenon early in her coaching career and quickly realized that the difference isn't the tactic—it's the underlying belief system.

Join us as we discuss how self-trust, mindset loops, and a craving for genuine human connection are reshaping how health and wellness practitioners build long-term, sustainable lifestyle businesses.

Most of us decided what money meant before we could even read.

Before we understood cash flow or profit margins, we were already learning. Watching how the adults around us talked about money, or went completely silent about it. Noticing whether it felt safe or scary. Whether it was something to protect, hide, or never quite have enough of.

And here's what I see in my work every single day: those early beliefs didn't stay in childhood.

They followed you into your business. They show up in the way you feel when you open your bank account. In the prices you set (because you were afraid to charge more). In the avoidance, the "I'll look at the numbers later" that somehow turns into weeks.

Your studio might be profitable on paper. You might be working harder than ever. And something still feels off.

That's not a business problem. That's a story that started long before your business did.

The good news: you didn't choose that story. And you can absolutely choose a different one.

What's the money belief you're still carrying that you didn't choose? Tell me in the comments. I read every single one. 💬

And if you're ready to start untangling it, that's exactly what a Fiscal Fitness Snapshot is for. Book yours free. Link in the comments.

"I have $80K coming in every month. Where is it all going?"

I hear this more than almost anything else from studio owners. And honestly? It makes complete sense that it's confusing.

Because revenue is just the top line. It's the number that shows up in your bank account before life happens. Before payroll. Before equipment financing. Before quarterly taxes. Before the seasonal slowdown you didn't fully plan for.

By the time all of that moves through, the money that actually lands in your pocket can feel like whatever was left over. Which, some months, isn't much.

This isn't a sign that something is broken. It's a sign that nobody ever sat down and showed you the gap.

Profit First works by flipping the order. Instead of expenses consuming revenue first and you getting whatever's left, you allocate first. Owner pay, profit, and taxes get set aside before expenses have a chance to eat through everything.

Understanding the gap is the first step to closing it.

Drop a 🙋 below if this has ever been your reality. I'd love to hear what that moment of realization felt like for you.

A reminder for every business owner who needs to hear it:

You don't have to figure everything out this month.
You don't have to fix every problem this week.
You don't need a perfect plan before taking the next step.

The strongest businesses aren't built through giant breakthroughs.

They're built through hundreds of small decisions made consistently over time.

One process improved.
One habit changed.
One number understood.
One step forward.

Keep going.
You're probably making more progress than you realize.
