🚨 📣 TAX TIP: Make Sure Your Filing Status & W-4 Are Correct! ✅
Choosing the correct filing status and making sure your W-4 is filled out correctly can affect:
✔️ Your tax refund
✔️ The credits you qualify for
✔️ How much tax is withheld from your paycheck
✔️ Whether you owe taxes or receive a refund
📌 Filing Statuses
• Single – You’re unmarried and don’t qualify for another filing status.
• Married Filing Jointly – You’re married and file one tax return together.
• Married Filing Separately – You’re married but choose to file separate tax returns.
• Head of Household – You’re unmarried (or meet IRS requirements to be considered unmarried), paid more than half the cost of keeping up your home, and have a qualifying dependent.
• Qualifying Surviving Spouse – Your spouse passed away within the last two years, you have a qualifying child, and meet IRS requirements.
đź’° What about claiming 0, 1, or 2 on your W-4?
Many people still ask about this:
• 0 – More federal taxes are generally withheld from each paycheck, which may increase your chances of receiving a larger refund (although it’s never guaranteed).
• 1 – A moderate amount of federal taxes is withheld.
• 2 or more – Less federal tax is generally withheld, giving you more take-home pay during the year, but you could receive a smaller refund or even owe taxes if not enough is withheld.
⚠️ Important: The current federal W-4 no longer uses allowances (0, 1, 2). Instead, withholding is based on your filing status, income, dependents, and any additional withholding you choose. However, some employers or state forms may still use the older terminology, which is why many people still ask about claiming “0, 1, or 2.”
