Plain-English Mid-Year Market Review

The first half of the year proved something investors often forget:

The headlines are not the market.

We navigated geopolitical conflict, oil price spikes, inflation fears, and plenty of volatility. Yet businesses continued to grow, corporate earnings remained strong, and markets recovered.

As we move into the second half of the year, I'm watching earnings, inflation, interest rates, and continued investment in AI. But I'm reminding clients of the same thing I do during every period of uncertainty:

Don't confuse short-term noise with long-term fundamentals.

That's where long-term wealth is built.

What surprised you most about the markets so far this year?

Watching the World Cup reminded me of something we all do.

We naturally look for evidence that confirms what we already believe.

In soccer, it's harmless.

In investing, it can be expensive.

The best investors aren't the ones who are always right. They're the ones willing to challenge their own assumptions when the facts change.

That's one of the biggest reasons I believe good financial advice is about more than investments. It's about having someone who can help you see what you might be missing.

Have you ever caught yourself doing this, whether in sports, investing, or everyday life?

The World Cup makes confirmation bias easy to see because our emotions are on full display. Investing isn't much different. The biggest threat to long-term returns often isn't the market. It's our own psychology.

Alexander Hamilton understood something about America's debt that most headlines still miss.

More than 230 years later, the same lesson helps explain why markets don't just care about how much debt we have—they also care about whether the world still trusts the United States to keep its promises.

History can't predict the future, but it can help explain today's markets.

Watch this week's Plain-English Market Brief and let me know what surprised you most.

Most conversations about the national debt focus on one number.

But the bigger question is one Alexander Hamilton understood more than 230 years ago:

Does the world still trust the United States to keep its promises?

The answer to that question has shaped markets, interest rates, and America's economic strength for generations.

That's what this week's Plain-English Market Brief is all about.

Markets posted solid second-quarter gains as investors responded to upbeat economic reports, continued diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, and strong first-quarter corporate numbers. The S&P 500 rose 14.87%, the Nasdaq gained 21.41%, and the Dow picked up 12.90%, while Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite added 6.37%. Looking ahead, markets may continue to react to Middle East updates, oil prices, inflation trends, and the pace of global commerce through the Strait of Hormuz. From U.S. home price growth to Canadian housing forecasts, this quarter’s by-the-numbers highlights the data behind one of North America’s most closely watched markets.

I'm honored to be recognized as a 2026 Five Star Wealth Manager and to be featured in Texas Monthly.

When I first entered this profession, I remember flipping through Texas Monthly and seeing the list of Five Star Wealth Managers. I always thought, "Maybe someday."

Today, that "someday" has become reality.

While I'm grateful for the recognition, what means the most to me is the trust my clients place in me every day.

Thank you to every client who has trusted me with your retirement, your family, your business, and your future. It is a responsibility I never take lightly, and I truly appreciate the confidence you've placed in me.

When I founded Mefford Wealth Management, my goal wasn't to build just another investment firm. I wanted to create a practice that looks at the whole picture—helping clients navigate investments, taxes, estate planning, and the behavioral side of money so they can make better financial decisions with confidence.

This recognition reflects the relationships we've built together, and I'm incredibly grateful to be part of your journey.

If you'd like to read the full feature and learn more about my approach to wealth management, I've linked the announcement in my bio.

Thank you again for your trust and support.
