Whether you're going through a divorce or know someone who is, here's something most people don't know: during divorce proceedings, there are automatic temporary restraining orders (ATROs) that prevent either spouse from making changes to insurance policies.
The challenge? Many people don't realize these protections exist, and unfortunately, they sometimes get violated.
We worked with one client whose husband removed her from his health insurance during their divorce. When she was later diagnosed with cancer, he became responsible for covering her entire treatment because he'd violated the legal order by removing her coverage.
These situations can create financial stress that takes years to sort out.
When we review divorce situations with clients, we look for these issues early on. Not to create conflict, but because addressing them proactively can help clients navigate these transitions with as much peace of mind as possible.
Clari Nolet put together a comprehensive guide that covers this topic along with so many other important considerations, from understanding COBRA options to discovering long-term care benefits that often get overlooked.
