Committed but unmarried: Protecting what you’ve built
Good information and legal plans to make:
Even in long-term relationships, unmarried partners don’t share the same legal protections as married couples. Without the right documents in place, one partner may have no automatic rights to:
Inherit property if the other passes away.
Make medical or financial decisions in an emergency.
Access shared assets or manage affairs if the other becomes incapacitated.
Couples who are not married can protect themselves by creating:
Cohabitation agreements (depending on the state) to define property ownership and financial responsibilities
Wills and trusts to ensure assets pass to one another
Powers of attorney and health care directives to authorize decision-making during illness or incapacity
Without these safeguards, key decisions may fall to relatives instead of the person you trust most.
_______
Whatever your relationship looks like, having the right legal framework in place can reduce stress, protect your partner, and help ensure your wishes are honored.
If you’d like to review your current documents or talk through which legal protections might make sense for your situation, feel free to reach out. We’re here to help.
Warmly,
