📣📣🚨🚨Important Update – Company-Paid Meals (Effective January 1, 2026)🚨🚨📣📣
Beginning January 1, 2026, the Internal Revenue Code will no longer allow federal income tax deductions for most company-paid meals and snacks provided to employees (such as catered lunches, office snacks, or meals in employer-operated cafeterias). This change comes from Internal Revenue Code Section 274(o), which disallows deductions for the cost of meals provided for the “convenience of the employer” and expenses for operating employer-provided eating facilities.

This rule was originally added to the tax code as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) enacted in 2017, but its full disallowance did not take effect until tax years beginning after December 31, 2025.

In 2025, Congress passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which adjusted some related tax provisions and clarified exceptions, but free or discounted meals provided to employees on-site will still generally be non-deductible beginning in 2026.

What this means for your company:

✅ Meals and snacks provided for employees as a workplace perk or for convenience will no longer reduce your taxable income.

✅ You will need to update your expense reporting and budgeting to reflect the loss of the meal expense deduction starting in 2026.

✅ This change does not affect business meals with clients or travel meals, which remain subject to the usual IRS substantiation rules and applicable meal deduction limits.

Does your Bookkeeping Suck?
An updated top 7 problems I see with business Books this & every tax season as a tax preparer...

1. Reconciliations - They either aren't done or the uncleared transactions haven't been reviewed. Finishing the reconciliation requires you to know why every uncleared item prior to the reconciled date is still supposed to be in the books.

2. Loans - Loans aren't split between principal/interest or they aren't even on the balance sheet and are recorded on the income statement as an expense!

3. Incomplete transactions - Transactions don't have the details for me to review, they are missing names, dates, descriptions, & reference numbers.

4. Owners Equity - Accounts not setup properly for business structure & Items that should be in equity accounts are on the Profit & Loss. You need to understand some tax basics to do correct bookkeeping. IE The owners donuts & coffee every morning is not a meal expense, UNLESS they are on a 100% business trip and had to stay over night.

5. Closing & Tax entries - Closing, Depreciation & Amortization entries from the previous year have not been done or do not match tax returns. You should know what accounts to manually close and to ask for the depreciation/amortization worksheet from the tax preparer/business owner to update the books.

6. Misc expense categories SHOLD NOT EXIST. If you don't know where to apply an expense you need more information from the owner or tax preparer.

7. Payroll doesn't match to W-2s/W-3 & Benefits not accounted for correctly. You need the payroll reports (and need to understand them) to accurately record wages, taxes, benefits & liabilities.

For tax years 2025 through 2028, individuals who receive qualified overtime compensation may deduct the pay that exceeds their regular rate of pay (generally, the “half” portion of “time-and-a-half” compensation) that is required by the Fair Labor Standards Act and reported on a Form W-2, Form 1099, or other specified statement.
Because the bill was signed in mid-2025, your 2025 W-2 (which you get in Jan 2026) will not have a specific box for this. If you just hand your W-2 to a tax preparer and don't say anything, you will likely lose this deduction.
The Step: You must manually calculate your overtime premium using your final 2025 pay stub and claim it on your return.
