Today I had the opportunity to attend this event on behalf of all four of my companies, as well as a new software development company where I serve as CFO and founder alongside a business partner with decades of government contracting experience.

I came to Richmond to meet smart people, build meaningful connections, and learn how we can contribute to solving real challenges at both the state and federal levels.

The Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce has been an incredible resource for connecting with talented professionals across industries, including outstanding faculty, students, and alumni from the finance and accounting programs at Virginia State University and VCU.

Richmond continues to be a place where great ideas and great people come together. I am excited about the brilliant colleagues and new friends I met today and look forward to seeing where these conversations lead.

And a friendly reminder to all the college students out there: becoming a CPA is actually pretty darn cool, even if we proudly embrace our nerdiness!

Another great evening with what I truly think is one of the best and most engaging ASA chapters anywhere. Always a good time when you get a room full of valuation professionals together discussing complex markets, fair value, and global trends.

Even better that my friend and colleague Sarah Reeder of ISA and AAA fame joined me for the event.

We heard a very informative presentation from Peter Tropper on private equity and emerging market valuation work. One interesting takeaway was how differently Fair Value can look across global markets. We may all technically follow the same IVSC framework, but emerging markets often seem to involve far more Level 3 inputs and a very different audit environment than what we typically see in the U.S.

Love this group and these conversations.

And yes… my eyes are closed in one of the photos, but I decided that was not a good enough reason not to post them anyway. 😂

This Memorial Day, MAS LLC, The Green Mission Inc., GM-ESG and Probity Appraisal Group pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. 🇺🇸

Their courage, dedication, and selflessness have protected the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy every day. We are deeply grateful to all who have served and especially mindful of the families carrying the legacy of those we have lost.

As we spend time with our families and communities this weekend, may we also take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and remember those who gave everything for our nation.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Transparency is the new currency. 💎

Donors aren't just looking at impact anymore. They are looking at risk.

Confidence is built on two pillars:

1️⃣ The Appraisal: The "shield" that defends the value of the gift.
2️⃣ 990 Compliance: The "radar" that proves the nonprofit is a stable partner.

A donor might be generous, but they will pause if they see "red flags" in public disclosures. Sophisticated donors scan Form 990s for governance health and fiscal stewardship before committing to complex non-cash gifts.

Compliance is a donor retention strategy.

The "Trust Gap" closes when:

✅ Appraisals provide defensible, third-party valuation.
✅ 990 Filings demonstrate rigorous oversight.
✅ Process Clarity protects the donor from start to finish.

When we treat compliance as a confidence mechanism, we unlock higher levels of participation.

Across the United States, donors are diverting tens of thousands of pounds of building materials, appliances, fixtures, furniture, and other commercial and residential content from landfills each week through donation to qualified 501(c)(3) charitable organizations.

The future of personal property appraisal depends on who shows up and who speaks up.

Great to see leaders like Patrick McIntyre of Artifactual History Appraisal stepping into roles with The Appraisal Foundation’s PPRP 👏 and professionals like Maria Tarrence of Capital Art Group representing the evolving, market-facing side of valuation.

Here is the reality 👇
Personal property appraisers do not have licensure, but we do have accreditation through three leading organizations that sponsor The Appraisal Foundation: the International Society of Appraisers, the American Society of Appraisers, and the Appraisers Association of America. This is where the critical education and experience requirements are established.

Taxpayers can protect themselves by hiring an appraiser from one of these three organizations.

The Appraisal Foundation, established in 1987, created USPAP to bring credibility to valuation 📊
Real estate followed with licensure.

Personal property has not yet.

In my view, there is still an opportunity to further strengthen standards.
✔️ Protect the public
✔️ Reinforce education and experience requirements
✔️ Elevate our profession

If we want a stronger voice, we need to use it. Talk to Patrick and Maria, get involved, and help us continue to lift the personal property valuation profession!

Thrilled to be at today’s sessions connecting with leaders across the appraisal, auction, and museum communities ✨

From Tash Perrin’s global market insights on what’s actively moving in the art and antiques space 📊, to Caitlin St. John’s practical approach to collateral-based valuation using real-time secondary market data 💼📈, the conversation stayed grounded in how value is actually determined and realized.

Christine Steiner highlighted the increasing collaboration between attorneys and appraisers in complex transactions and disputes ⚖️, while Kelly Davids provided a forward-looking update on the profession and where standards and practice are heading 🚀📚.

Breakout sessions added important perspective, from ethical considerations in repatriation 🌎🤝 to the nuanced challenges of valuing specialized assets like musical instruments 🎻🔍.

A full day reinforcing how critical credible valuation, strong documentation, and market-based support are across every facet of this work 📑✅

Grateful to be part of a profession that continues to evolve with both integrity and purpose 🙏

Strengthening community ties at the Fredericksburg Chamber Annual Meeting!

It was an absolute pleasure attending the annual Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce gala. Green Mission ESG was proud to support the evening as a sponsor, celebrating the vibrant business community we call home.

I was thrilled to host a fantastic group of guests at our table:

Shaina Amaya and her husband John Amaya (a fellow Board member at the Stafford Education Foundation).

Dr. Daniel Smith and his wife Michelle.

The evening was filled with great connections. It was wonderful catching up with the team from Link Bank and the brilliant Christina Parrish of Parrish Law Partners. Christina is a high-caliber attorney, and I’m looking forward to referring our MAS LLC tax clients to her for their estate planning and ex*****on needs.

I also loved reconnecting with Veronica Gutierrez, Executive Director of Operations and Community Engagement. It was great to see a familiar face from our ChamberWorks class this week!

Together, we’re building a stronger, more connected region. 🥂

Six years ago today, the world hit a standstill.

When the 2020 lockdowns began, we did not just go remote to survive a crisis; we used the disruption to permanently dismantle the traditional office.

At The Green Mission Inc. we realized that the 9 to 5 desk-time model was a performative relic. It ignored the reality of how high-performing women actually live and work.

By trading commutes and office drama for radical flexibility and mutual accountability, we turned a global shutdown into a new permanent office model.

Managing the "Invisible Shift"

As a women-led organization, we lead from the "Sandwich Generation." We understand that the global economy is subsidized by the silent labor of women, a tax that often forces talent out of the workforce. The data is clear:

The Time Tax: Women perform 76% of all unpaid care work globally.

The Economic Engine: Women spend 3x more time on domestic labor than men, a shift valued at $10.8 trillion annually.

Our Practice: Performance Over Presence

Rather than pretending these demands do not exist, our management style absorbs them. We replaced rigid schedules with asynchronous productivity and deep cross-training. Our team does not "clock in" to prove they are working; we deliver results.

This focus on performance over presence has allowed us to scale into a multi-firm ecosystem with the expansion to Probity Appraisal Group and Green Mission ESG Solutions and 26 years with MAS LLC

The Long Game

We are not interested in a hustle culture that discards talent the moment a family crisis hits. When your business is built around your life rather than against it, the math changes. If one has a child or other significant life event, they do not work and continue being paid (with health insurance!) until they are ready to return.

My retirement aligns with this plan, which is announced to be January 31, 2071, my 95th birthday. Retirement will be simultaneously with my passing, perhaps moments after receiving an e-file notification confirming a client’s tax return has been accepted.

Our companies will continue to be built on trust, grit, and results.
