Today I had the opportunity to attend this event on behalf of all four of my companies, as well as a new software development company where I serve as CFO and founder alongside a business partner with decades of government contracting experience.

I came to Richmond to meet smart people, build meaningful connections, and learn how we can contribute to solving real challenges at both the state and federal levels.

The Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce has been an incredible resource for connecting with talented professionals across industries, including outstanding faculty, students, and alumni from the finance and accounting programs at Virginia State University and VCU.

Richmond continues to be a place where great ideas and great people come together. I am excited about the brilliant colleagues and new friends I met today and look forward to seeing where these conversations lead.

And a friendly reminder to all the college students out there: becoming a CPA is actually pretty darn cool, even if we proudly embrace our nerdiness!

Rental property owners often focus on maximizing deductions but overlook one of the most important tax questions:

Should an expenditure be expensed today or capitalized and depreciated over time?

The difference can mean an immediate deduction this year or waiting 27.5 years to fully recover the cost of a residential rental property improvement.

In my latest article, I walk through:

• The difference between deductible repairs and capital improvements
• The Betterment, Adaptation, and Restoration (BAR) test
• The De Minimis Safe Harbor
• The Safe Harbor for Small Taxpayers
• The Routine Maintenance Safe Harbor
• Common audit triggers and documentation best practices

Understanding these rules can help landlords avoid overpaying taxes while maintaining compliance with IRS regulations. Most rental activities are reported on Schedule E, making proper classification of expenditures critical for tax planning and audit defense.

Another great evening with what I truly think is one of the best and most engaging ASA chapters anywhere. Always a good time when you get a room full of valuation professionals together discussing complex markets, fair value, and global trends.

Even better that my friend and colleague Sarah Reeder of ISA and AAA fame joined me for the event.

We heard a very informative presentation from Peter Tropper on private equity and emerging market valuation work. One interesting takeaway was how differently Fair Value can look across global markets. We may all technically follow the same IVSC framework, but emerging markets often seem to involve far more Level 3 inputs and a very different audit environment than what we typically see in the U.S.

Love this group and these conversations.

And yes… my eyes are closed in one of the photos, but I decided that was not a good enough reason not to post them anyway. 😂

This Memorial Day, MAS LLC, The Green Mission Inc., GM-ESG and Probity Appraisal Group pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. 🇺🇸

Their courage, dedication, and selflessness have protected the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy every day. We are deeply grateful to all who have served and especially mindful of the families carrying the legacy of those we have lost.

As we spend time with our families and communities this weekend, may we also take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and remember those who gave everything for our nation.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

New article up on the difference between the R&D Tax Credit under §41 and the R&D Deduction under §174/174A and why many businesses are confusing the two. 🧾💡🔬

Key takeaways:
✅ Immediate expensing of domestic R&D costs is back under the OBBBA
✅ Foreign R&D still requires 15-year amortization
✅ The §41 R&D credit remains separate and highly documentation-driven
✅ Qualified small businesses may be able to offset payroll taxes with the credit
✅ Many businesses may qualify for amended returns and catch-up deductions

The interaction between the deduction and the credit can create major tax planning opportunities for startups, software developers, manufacturers, engineers, and innovation-focused businesses. 📈

And yes… this is probably not something to run through TurboTax. 😅 Jessica Irving Marschall

Our latest article discusses the recent federal student loan classification changes that excluded accounting from the Department of Education’s list of “professional degree” programs and why that framework misses the reality of the profession.

CPAs complete rigorous education requirements, pass one of the most difficult professional licensing exams in the country, maintain continuing education requirements, and serve critical roles in financial reporting, taxation, audit, valuation, advisory, and economic stability.

At a time when the accounting profession is already facing a significant talent shortage, reducing graduate borrowing access for accounting students sends the wrong message about a field built on public trust, ethics, technical expertise, and licensure.

Accounting has been a licensed profession in the United States since 1896, and that reality does not change because of a federal loan classification.

After a few years of taking only referrals, MAS LLC is opening our doors again to new clients in the Fredericksburg area.

Here is the honest reason why.

Small businesses and the individuals running them sit in a tough middle space. The excellent larger firms in our region simply do not have enough bandwidth for smaller clients. What has filled that gap, in too many cases, are firms that go silent for months and then surface on April 15th asking to charge for an extension, or strip-mall preparers depreciating land and deducting full mortgage payments on a Schedule C.

We see the cleanup. The audit notices, the penalties, the panicked calls.

Our premise is straightforward: clients deserve responsive, technically sound tax advisory services even when they cannot allocate $2,000 to $5,000 a month. Responsiveness is not a luxury service. It is the baseline of competent advisory work.

We have a little over 400 clients, 25 brilliant team members (with five more joining this year), and I still have direct contact with every client. My team begs me to set better boundaries. I refuse.
If you are a small business owner or individual taxpayer in the Fredericksburg area, we would welcome the conversation.
