Individual and small business accounting, bookkeeping, consulting and tax services

📈 Is your business on the wrong side of today's K-shaped economy?

Many small businesses are working harder than ever, yet keeping less of what they earn. Rising labor costs, inflation, higher borrowing costs, and increasing tax burdens are squeezing cash flow. The solution is not always working harder. Often, it is planning smarter.

In my latest article, I discuss seven advanced tax strategies that have long been used by sophisticated businesses and investors and explain how they can also benefit small businesses right here in the Fredericksburg region.

💡 Topics include:
🏢 Building wealth through real estate investing, depreciation, cost segregation, and Section 1031 exchanges
📈 Qualified Small Business Stock (QSBS) planning and Section 351 transfers
📄 Choosing between an S corporation and a C corporation
🌎 Opportunity Zone investments
💼 Retirement plan strategies for business owners
📅 Timing income and deductions to improve cash flow
🔬 Research & Development tax credits and the restored immediate deduction for domestic research expenditures

Our goal at MAS LLC is simple: bring large-firm tax strategy to the local entrepreneurs, family businesses, and professionals who are driving our community forward. We also enjoy collaborating with local CPAs, bookkeepers, attorneys, and financial advisors to provide specialized tax planning while allowing them to continue serving their clients in the areas they know best.

🤖 AI and accounting is not coming, it has arrived.

The VSCPA’s AI in Practice survey confirms what we are seeing: firms are using AI to boost efficiency and service, while still navigating concerns around security, accuracy, ethics, and training. (Link in comments)

At MAS LLC, The Green Mission Inc., GM-ESG Solutions, and Probity Appraisal Group, we adopted early, and I would do it again. But the hard part has not been the technology. It has been people and process.

🔒 Training teams to use secure systems, not public tools
🔒 Reminding clients not to upload sensitive data such as full tax returns into free AI platforms (!!!)
🎓 Helping younger professionals build real judgment without years of manual work

AI’s biggest benefit is that it frees our team to focus on complex problems, strategy, and client value while reducing repetitive errors.

We have also tested Thomson Reuters CoCounsel. Let’s just say this battle hardened 50-year-old CPA did a better job sourcing IRC, but I will give it more time to catch up! I mean, we had to take the entire CPA exam at one time and pass the whole darn thing.

AI is not replacing CPAs.

It is making strong CPAs even better and making judgment, critical thinking, and training more important than ever.

… and kudos to Journal of Accountancy for starting their paper copies back in circulation. This CPA will always appreciate paper!

✨ Fredericksburg is powered by women in tax, finance, and advisory and I’m proud that MAS LLC is part of this incredible network.

I had the opportunity to meet with
💼 Brittany Doughty of Cary Street Partners
📊 Rebecca Maher of Fxbg Accounting & Advisory
📘 Melinda May of Featherstone CPA

Each of these women brings exceptional technical expertise, leadership, and a shared commitment to strengthening Fredericksburg’s small business community. Together, we are a powerhouse of female professionals dedicated to serving our region with integrity, collaboration, and deep industry knowledge.

And it was perfectly fitting that we gathered at Anita's Cafe & Dessert Bar, a woman‑owned local favorite that reflects the same spirit of community and excellence ☕🍰

Proud to stand alongside these leaders and proud to represent MAS LLC in this circle of women shaping the future of finance in Fredericksburg.

If I had a nickel for everyone with whom I discuss the following...well I would probably still not retire. Here is our latest article on SSA and credible solutions...(hint...they are bipartisan and require debunking myths.)

Social Security’s solvency challenge is not a mystery. It is arithmetic with a deadline. According to the 2026 Trustees Report, the Old‑Age and Survivors Insurance trust fund is projected to be depleted in the fourth quarter of 2032. If Congress does not act, benefits will be reduced automatically by 22 percent, with only 78 percent payable from incoming payroll taxes.

The trust fund has always been a ledger rather than a vault. The core drivers of the shortfall are demographic: longer lifespans, lower fertility, and fewer workers supporting each beneficiary. The worker‑to‑beneficiary ratio is now 2.9 to 1 and is projected to fall to 2.2 to 1.

Immigration, contrary to popular belief, slows insolvency by contributing an estimated 26 billion dollars annually in payroll taxes from undocumented workers alone.

Real solutions fall into three categories:

• Increasing revenue through adjustments to the payroll cap, closing pass‑through loopholes, modest rate changes, or redirecting benefit‑tax revenue

• Adjusting eligibility ages

• Modifying benefit formulas, particularly for higher earners

Balanced bipartisan proposals already exist, including a Brookings plan that restores 75‑year solvency through a mix of revenue changes, targeted benefit adjustments, and improvements for survivors, disabled workers, and children.

The practical takeaway for advisors and taxpayers is clear. Social Security will endure, but it is being renegotiated. Retirement plans should be able to withstand potential benefit reductions while anticipating eventual congressional action.

Retirement & Fiscal Policy Social Security is neither a fraud nor a mystery. It is a math problem with a known deadline, a short list of workable levers, and a narrowing window in which to pull them. Jessica Marschall, CPA     ·     Marschall Accounting Services, LLC     ·     July...

This is a troubling finding. As a CPA of 26 years, I can attest that there are some great people at the IRS who have helped my clients push to resolution after years of communications.

However, more than once IRS representatives have asked me for clarification on an IRC interpretation and have said, "That is why we send people to their CPAs."

It did not help that 25% of employees were eliminated and it has been my experience that these were some of the most experienced employees who did not want to deal with some of the changes initiated.

What is left is a mess for our clients, minimal TAC appointments available, and now a study that shows 46% of IRS TAC employees provided the wrong tax law guidance and 33% received incomplete or inaccurate responses.
..and for more fun news, IRS chatbot advice might be wrong...leading to a lack of wonder as to why so many CPAs are retiring or leaving tax advisory work! https://www.accountingtoday.com/news/irs-chatbot-results-may-be-wrong?cx_testId=1&cx_testVariant=cx_1&cx_artPos=0&cx_experienceId=EX0SQ413PQVZ&cx_experienceActionId=showRecommendationsTYQLRH4X7TPS17

The Internal Revenue Service's Taxpayer Assistance Centers staff provided incorrect advice about the tax laws in nearly half the visits by inspectors.

🎉 Five years ago, Caroline Judith Marschall joined our team, and today we are proud to celebrate her work anniversary across all four of our firms. 🌿

As Chief Operating Officer of The Green Mission Inc., GM-ESG, Probity Appraisal Group, and Marschall Accounting Services LLC, Caroline has grown from an appraisal researcher into the operational backbone of our practice. 💼 She hires and trains our appraisal research team, reviews and edits the reports they produce, and manages and continually grows our proprietary database of comparable sales. 📊 She coordinates workflows across the firms, tracks performance, and personally completes appraisals by researching comparable sales, developing opinions of fair market value, and holding every report to a standard of accuracy and defensibility. ✅

Her credentials reflect that same drive. 🎓 Caroline earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and is completing her Master of Accounting at William and Mary, where she is a CPA candidate preparing to sit for the exam. 📚 She is also pursuing membership with the International Society of Appraisers as she works toward the qualified appraiser designation, uniting her accounting and valuation expertise in one career. 🤝

Caroline, thank you for five years of dedication, leadership, and steady growth. 🌟 We cannot wait to see what the next five hold. 🚀

Please join us in congratulating her! 👏

🎓🌟 Celebrating excellence in education across the Fredericksburg region!

Although our TGMI team was unable to attend this year's Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce Educator Excellence Brunch & Awards, I was proud to have my daughter, Annabelle Marschall, attend on behalf of Stafford Education Foundation, where I serve as President. As a founder of Stafford DreamWise, Annabelle understands firsthand the importance of investing in students, educators, and the future of our community.

We were especially proud to see Mr. Joseph Eveler, Choir Director at Stafford High School, recognized as an Outstanding Educator. Mr. Eveler has inspired generations of students through music, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. On a personal note, he is also Annabelle's choir director, making this recognition even more meaningful to our family. 🎶👏

Congratulations to Mr. Eveler and to all of the incredible educators, administrators, students, and community leaders recognized for their dedication to shaping the next generation. Your passion and commitment make a lasting difference every single day.

Thank you to the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce for continuing to recognize and celebrate the educators who strengthen our schools and our community. The Chamber honored educators from across the region for their leadership, innovation, and commitment to student success, highlighting the vital role they play in preparing tomorrow's workforce.
