This past Saturday evening was a meaningful blend of family time and professional application. I joined my aunt and uncle to dive into their construction company finances, tackling a year’s worth of transactions, carefully categorizing them, and establishing a robust chart of accounts.

We wrapped up with tacos, empanadas, and apple pie à la mode, but the real takeaway was the reminder that, even as I’m continually learning and growing, I already bring valuable knowledge others are looking for. I’m grateful for family support and the opportunity to apply accounting skills in real-world settings.

If you or someone you know needs help with accounting, transaction categorization, or setting up a chart of accounts for a small business, I’d be happy to connect.

I have an upcoming FNA biopsy.

It started with a simple observation at a regular checkup. My primary care physician noticed that my thyroid looked swollen. No tests yet, just observation. That alone was enough to take the next step.

An ultrasound confirmed nodules on my thyroid. From there, I met with the specialist who will be performing the biopsy. She reassured me that the procedure is common, quick, and focused on one goal: extracting tissue to determine whether the nodules are benign.

That conversation got me thinking.

In accounting, trained bookkeepers operate the same way.

We can look at a P&L or balance sheet and immediately sense when something isn’t right. Maybe revenue looks strong, but cash is negative. That’s a red flag. Something doesn’t add up.

And when we dig deeper, we often find:
• Unreconciled accounts
• Owner’s draws miscategorized as expenses
• Transactions sitting in “Ask My Accountant” with no clear direction

Just like in healthcare, the goal isn’t just surface-level reassurance. It’s clarity and confidence.

My role goes beyond cleaning up books and making them compliant. It’s about giving clients peace of mind. Letting them know they’re in the right place, with the right person.

Identify the problem.
Propose the solution.
Execute with confidence.

Because whether it’s your health or your finances, what looks small on the surface deserves a closer look.

A client came to me, wanting to buy an investment property... but didnt have the necessary capital to purchase. Instead of saying, sorry... we came up with plan. Leverage the equity in his current home that he bought in 2022. We were able to get him the necessary down payment, reserves and some additional capital for repairs from his homes equity, and he is now a Real Estate Investor, closed on his first investment property in February, and is already looking at ways to buy his second investment. If you own a home and want to get into Real Estate Investing, lets talk and find a way to your goal!

Smart cash flow management is the lifeblood of any successful business, from startups to established enterprises. It's not just about profit; it's about having the liquidity to seize opportunities, weather challenges, and ensure sustainable growth. Without a handle on your cash, even profitable businesses can face significant hurdles.

Here are a few essential tips to help you optimize your cash flow and strengthen your financial foundation:

1. Monitor Regularly: Cash flow isn't a "set it and forget it" task. Consistently track your inflows and outflows to spot trends, anticipate shortages, and identify areas for improvement. Use accounting software or simple spreadsheets to keep a close eye on your financial pulse.

2. Forecast, Forecast, Forecast: Develop robust cash flow forecasts for the short-term (weekly/monthly) and long-term (quarterly/annually). This allows you to plan for upcoming expenses, manage inventory effectively (if applicable), and make informed strategic decisions.

3. Optimize Accounts Receivable: Speed up collections. Implement clear payment terms, send invoices promptly, and follow up courteously but consistently on overdue payments. Consider early payment incentives or diversified payment options to encourage timely settlement.

4. Manage Accounts Payable Strategically: While you want to collect fast, you can often pay smart. Negotiate favorable payment terms with suppliers without damaging relationships. Take advantage of early payment discounts when beneficial, but don't rush payments if it strains your immediate cash position.

5. Build a Cash Reserve: Always aim to have a buffer. An emergency fund can be a lifesaver during unexpected downturns, allowing you to cover operating expenses without resorting to high-interest loans.

6. Control Operating Expenses: Regularly review your expenses and identify areas where you can reduce costs without sacrificing quality or efficiency. This might involve renegotiating contracts, optimizing subscriptions, or finding more cost-effective suppliers.

By actively managing your cash flow, you gain better control over your business's destiny, enabling you to make smarter decisions and drive sustainable success.

Problem: Recently, a client made two credit card payments on the same day for different amounts, but only one transaction posted, leading to confusion about the balance.

The challenge: An unposted payment can leave the liability overstated and create unnecessary worry for the client.

Solution (what we did):

• Contacting the issuer: We reviewed the statements, gathered payment details (date, amounts, any confirmation numbers), and reached the issuer’s customer service to locate and apply the unposted payment or confirm its status.

• Fixing liability: Once the correct payment was applied or clarified, we updated our internal records to reflect the true balance.
• Reconciliation template: This situation highlighted the value of a simple, reusable reconciliation template to keep payments, charges, and postings aligned across multiple clients.

Why it matters: The template helps track payments, compare bank and card statements, note discrepancies, and document follow-up actions, so every client’s numbers tie consistently.

Send me a message if you’d like a copy of the reconciliation template or a quick walkthrough of how to implement it for your clients.
