Mitch McConnell has been out of public view for nearly eight weeks, collecting his taxpayer-funded Senate salary while recovering from a fall. Now he has been released from rehab and says he’ll continue working from home.
Good. He should recover. Everyone deserves the time, medical care, and flexibility they need to heal.
Everyone.
But that basic principle has apparently always applied more easily to powerful senators than to the people they represent.
McConnell voted against the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act—even though it guaranteed only unpaid, job-protected leave. In 2015, he voted against a Senate amendment supporting earned paid sick time for American workers. And in 2020, as Senate majority leader, he blocked an effort to extend emergency paid sick and family leave during a deadly pandemic.
So let’s be crystal clear about the double standard: Mitch McConnell can take nearly two months away from the Senate, keep receiving his full salary, recover at home, do physical therapy, and “engage” with colleagues remotely. But millions of workers are still expected to choose between staying home sick and making rent.
If you work at a warehouse, a restaurant, a school, a hospital, a retail store, a construction site, or an office that suddenly decided remote work is “over,” you may not have the luxury of simply disappearing from work for seven weeks with your paycheck intact. You may spread illness to coworkers and customers because this country still refuses to guarantee what virtually every working person should have: paid time to recover.
And the same Republican political culture that spent years sneering at remote work, demanding workers get “back to the office,” and treating paid leave as some extravagant handout is now perfectly comfortable letting an 84-year-old senator work from home indefinitely on the public dime.
Nobody is saying sick people should be punished or forced to work through medical crises. We’re saying working people deserve the same dignity, security, and flexibility that wealthy, powerful elected officials automatically receive.
We deserve so much better.
