Retiring a few years early is the goal for a lot of people. More time with family and more good years to actually enjoy it.

But leaving work early usually means leaving your employer's health plan early, and Medicare doesn't start until later. Those years in between are on you. Coverage at that age tends to cost more than people expect, and it's one of the easiest expenses to leave out of a retirement budget.

The answer is planning for that gap on purpose: knowing where your coverage will come from and building the cost into your income plan before you hand in your notice.

Do that, and the early retirement you've been working toward becomes something you can actually afford to enjoy.

If you retired tomorrow, would you know where your health insurance was coming from?

Someday starts today.

Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7 each year: a defined window to review your coverage and make updates if needed.

This year, some Medicare enrollees may see changes involving prescription drug coverage, provider networks, or out-of-pocket costs. That’s one reason it may be worth taking a closer look before automatically renewing current coverage.

Even a simple review of costs, prescriptions, and provider access can help clarify whether current coverage still fits your needs heading into the new year.

Call Richon Planning 919-300-5886 with any questions.

A lot of people assume Medicare works like a flat fee. Everyone turns 65, everyone gets the same bill.

In reality, Medicare premiums are tied to income. Once your income passes certain levels, you pay more for the same coverage. Two neighbors on the same street can pay very different amounts.

This is where planning matters. The way you take income in retirement can affect which bracket you land in, and a little foresight can keep one big income year from pushing your premiums up.

When your income plan is built on purpose, more of your retirement goes toward the people and plans you care about, and less goes to surprises.

Did you know your income could change what you pay for Medicare?

Retiring before Medicare kicks in usually means buying your own health insurance for a while, and those premiums can be a shock.

It's tempting to lowball your income estimate to get more help with the cost. But that estimate gets checked against your actual tax return. If you earn more than you said, you could owe the difference back at tax time. And if your income lands above the eligibility line, even by a little, that help can disappear completely.

The smarter approach is an accurate estimate and a retirement income plan built to control where your income lands each year. That's worth mapping out before you leave work, while you still have options.

Get it right, and the years before Medicare feel like the start of the retirement you planned for.

Are you planning to retire before Medicare? How are you handling health insurance until then?

Someday starts today.

Plenty of people have 65 circled as the year healthcare finally stops costing them money.

Medicare is something you paid into your whole working life, and it covers a lot. But Medicare has a price tag. There are monthly premiums, each spouse pays their own, and because they're tied to income, some retirees pay more than the standard amount.

So healthcare needs its own line in your retirement income plan. When you know the cost is coming, you can budget for it, and how you draw income in retirement can affect what you pay.

Get that piece settled ahead of time, and your retirement dollars stay pointed at the someday you saved them for.

Be honest: were you counting on Medicare costing nothing?

Someday starts today.

🤔 When might a Roth conversion NOT make sense?

Timing matters! Converting during your peak earning years could mean a higher tax bill, while using converted funds to pay taxes before age 59½ could trigger an additional 10% penalty.

💡 Roth conversions aren't just about if you should convert, but when it makes the most financial sense.
