Taxpayers can now view and submit Trump Account elections in their IRS Individual Account
IR-2026-68, May 28, 2026

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced new features in IRS Individual Accounts that allow taxpayers to view and submit Trump Account elections, making it easier to invest in these tax-advantaged accounts.

Through IRS Individual Account, taxpayers can securely access their tax information and complete common tasks online, including:

View the latest submission status of their Form 4547, Trump Account Election(s), including next steps.
Submit Form 4547, Trump Account Election(s), electronically.
“These new features reflect our continued focus on transforming the IRS into a digital-first agency that delivers a faster, more seamless experience for taxpayers and provides a new tax-advantaged investment account for children to save for college, retirement, and building generational wealth,” said IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano. “By expanding the IRS Individual Account to include this new status, we are providing taxpayers with this tool in addition to features for managing their tax accounts, tracking important transactions, and completing key actions quickly and securely.”

Taxpayers benefit from greater transparency through real-time visibility into the Trump Account election process. Electronic submissions also improve accuracy, speed up processing times, and reduce delays associated with paper forms.

Trump Account election
Through the One, Big, Beautiful Bill, enacted on July 4, 2025, Trump Accounts allow parents, guardians, and other authorized individuals to establish a new type of individual retirement account for their children.

An account can be established for a child who has not reached age 18 by the end of the calendar year in which the election is made and who has a valid Social Security number.

A one-time $1,000 pilot program contribution from the Department of the Treasury is available for eligible children born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028, who are U.S. citizens with a valid Social Security number. The IRS continues to provide updates and additional information about the tax benefits under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill. For details, see One, Big, Beautiful Bill Provisions on IRS.gov.

If you have recently received a notice from the Michigan Department of Treasury that does not seem to
add up, you are not alone, and in many cases, there is no need to take immediate action.

Top of the Hill Services is aware of a widespread issue impacting Michigan taxpayers, and the Treasury
has confirmed the root cause is a system error that triggered incorrect notices across a large number of
accounts.

What Caused the Issue?
According to the Michigan Department of Treasury, a processing error led to estimated tax payments
and credit carryforwards not being properly applied when generating recent notices. While the notices
may reflect discrepancies, Treasury has clarified that taxpayer payments are still accurately recorded
within its e Services system.
In short, the notices are incorrect, not your payments.
The issue appears to impact notices dated between April 2 and April 28, 2026. Treasury has temporarily
halted additional notices while corrections are underway, and updated notices are expected to be
issued once the system is fully reconciled.

What Should You Do Now?
For most taxpayers, the best course of action is to wait.
The State has indicated that corrected notices will be distributed before any appeal deadlines lapse.
However, if you receive a notice that you believe is inaccurate and a corrected version does not arrive in
time, it is important to file an appeal to preserve your rights.
Every situation is unique, so if you are unsure how this applies to you, it is worth getting a second
opinion.

Received an Unexpected Refund Check? Proceed with Caution.
Some taxpayers may also receive refund checks that were not anticipated. These may be tied to prior
underpayment penalties or misapplied credits.
Treasury is advising taxpayers not to cash these checks if they appear to be issued in error, as doing so
could complicate the correction process.
If you believe a refund was sent incorrectly, return the check uncashed to:

Michigan Department of Treasury P.O. Box 30788 Lansing, MI 48909

Include a brief explanation and retain documentation for your records.

guidance indicated notices dated March 30 through April 17, 2026, were impacted. This has since been
revised to include notices dated April 2 through April 28, 2026. All other guidance remains unchanged.

This will affect you if you owe taxes and mail a check! As of December 24, 2025, the USPS new postmark rules mean your mail is now postmarked based on when it is first processed at a regional facility, not when it is dropped in a mailbox. This can cause delays of 1–3 days, risking late fees for time-sensitive items like tax returns or payments. To ensure the correct date, you must request a manual, in-person postmark.
