They had already lost everything. The only thing Bridget and Louie had left was each other.

When the two dogs were surrendered to Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Conroe, Texas, no reason was given. Frightened and confused, they pressed themselves together, clinging to one another as if they knew they were all that remained of the life they had known.

The pain they carried wasn't just emotional—it was written all over their bodies.

Both dogs showed heartbreaking signs of neglect, with mange and severely matted fur. Louie, the smaller black dog, wore a barbed metal collar that had become embedded in his neck.

Bridget's upper teeth had been ground down almost to the gums, and she appeared to have had multiple litters.

Her damaged teeth may have been the result of years spent chewing on a metal chain. Even more tragically, female dogs used in dog fighting operations sometimes have their teeth filed down to prevent injuries during breeding or when being used as bait animals. Whatever had happened to Bridget, it was impossible to look at her without wondering what she had endured.

The shelter staff saw the bond between them immediately. Even in the midst of fear and uncertainty, Bridget and Louie refused to be separated, so they were kept together in the same kennel.

That simple act of compassion changed everything.

Just one day later, Texas Animal Society stepped in and rescued the pair. As they climbed aboard their freedom ride with their foster mom and dad, the hardest chapter of their lives was finally beginning to close.

When they reached their foster home, something incredible happened. Instead of cold concrete floors and uncertainty, they found soft furniture, gentle hands, and a place where they could finally let their guard down. Bridget made a beeline for the couch, curled up, and for perhaps the first time in a very long time, slept peacefully.

Together, the pair spent their days stretched out on the porch, eyes closed, soaking up the warmth of the sun and the safety they had never stopped hoping for.

Day by day, their wounds healed. Their frightened expressions softened. The two dogs who had once huddled together in terror slowly learned that love could replace fear.

And then came the ending every rescue story hopes for.

Bridget and Louie never had to say goodbye again. After making a full recovery, they were adopted by the very foster family who had helped them heal. Together, they started a brand-new life in San Diego, California—still side by side, just as they had been from the very beginning. ❤️🐾

‘False and Irresponsible’
Donald Palmer, senior legal fellow for election integrity at The Heritage Foundation, condemned Slotkin’s comments.

“To say that confirming citizenship of voters is ‘rigging elections’ is false and irresponsible,” Palmer told the Daily Signal. “Senator Slotkin is desperately trying to stoke the fears of potential supporters by throwing out these false claims.”

“More importantly, she is simply ignoring the opinions of voters of all races and party preference who universally support photo ID and citizenship verification in polling across the country,” he added. “She knows she is on the wrong side of an 85-15 issue and that’s not a great place for a politician.”

They sent their beloved sheepdog to another farm for a trial.

Twelve days later, he was sitting on their doorstep after walking 240 miles home.

When Pero left home, his family thought they were doing what was best for him.

The four-year-old sheepdog had been sent on a trial to another farm in Cockermouth, Cumbria, where a farmer needed a skilled working dog to round up sheep and work alongside a quad bike. Everyone believed Pero would be perfect for the job.

But Pero had other plans.

Not long after arriving, he slipped away while out herding sheep. Somehow, the determined sheepdog set off on an extraordinary 240-mile journey from northern England back to the family farm near Aberystwyth, Wales. It was a route he'd never traveled before, yet over the next 12 days he averaged an astonishing 20 miles a day, crossing fields, forests, rivers, hills, and towns.

Back at home, Alan and Shan James had been told Pero had disappeared without a trace. They had no idea where he was or whether they would ever see him again.

Then one evening, after supper, Alan stepped outside to check on the animals.

Standing on the doorstep was Pero.

The exhausted pup immediately began jumping in circles with excitement, overjoyed to finally be home again.

Despite his incredible trek, Pero had only a slight limp and had lost a little weight. He wasn't weak or especially hungry, leading his family to believe kind strangers may have helped him find food along the way.

To this day, no one knows exactly how Pero managed to navigate 240 miles back to the family farm. His owners believe he must have relied on an incredible homing instinct, though the journey remains a mystery.

His family still wonders whether anyone along the route spotted a friendly black-and-white sheepdog looking for a meal.

One thing, however, became crystal clear the moment he arrived home.

Pero had already chosen where he belonged.

Marriage means making changes before next filing season

Marriage is an exciting milestone, but it can also affect a couple's tax situation. Here are some simple steps after the wedding that can help make filing next year's tax return easier.

Report a name change
If either person changes their name, it should be reported to the Social Security Administration prior to filing a tax return. The name on the tax return must match Social Security records to avoid processing delays.

Submit a change of address, if needed
If either or both spouses moved to a new home, they should notify their local post office, employers, financial institutions and the IRS of any address change. Taxpayers can officially change their mailing address with the IRS by completing and submitting Form 8822, Change of Address.

Check tax withholding
Marriage may change a couple’s tax responsibilities. Newlyweds should give their employers a new Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Certificate, within 10 days. If both people work, this could move them into a higher tax bracket or they may be affected by the additional Medicare tax. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can be used to estimate the amount of federal income tax to withhold from their paychecks now for the taxes they will owe next year.

Review filing status
A taxpayer's marital status as of December 31 determines their tax filing options for the entire year. Married people can choose to file their federal income taxes jointly or separately. While filing jointly is usually more beneficial, it's best to figure the tax both ways to find out which makes the most sense.

Keep tax records together
Combining important tax documents, such as Forms W-2, Forms 1099 and prior-year tax returns, can help make tax filing easier and ensure all income is reported.

Explore tax credits and deductions
Marriage may affect eligibility for certain tax credits and deductions. Couples should review available tax benefits before filing their return.

A true hero !

Cena was more than a dog. He was a Marine.

The Black Labrador served as a bomb-detection dog with the United States Marine Corps from 2009 to 2014, completing three tours in Afghanistan alongside his handler, former Marine Cpl. Jeff DeYoung. Their partnership began when Jeff was just 19 years old, and together they faced some of the most dangerous conditions imaginable.

Trained to detect more than 300 types of explosives, Cena's job was to find hidden threats before troops reached them. Every successful alert had the potential to save lives, making him an indispensable member of the team.

After a hip injury forced Cena into retirement in 2014, his mission wasn't over. Through American Humane, he was reunited with Jeff, this time as his service dog. As Jeff struggled with PTSD and the loss of fellow Marines, Cena remained by his side, providing the comfort and unwavering companionship that helped him through some of the darkest years of his life. Jeff later shared that Cena helped save him, just as he had helped protect so many others overseas.

When Cena was diagnosed with bone cancer, Jeff knew his loyal partner deserved a farewell worthy of his extraordinary service.

On July 26, 2017, hundreds of people gathered in Muskegon, Michigan, to honor the retired military dog. Dressed in custom Marine dress blues adorned with ribbons and decorations, Cena took one final ride through the community in a topless Jeep as Marines, veterans, police officers, firefighters, and local residents stood to pay their respects. The procession ended aboard the USS LST 393, where Taps was played in his honor.

Surrounded by love, Cena passed peacefully in Jeff's arms—the same Marine who had trusted him in combat, leaned on him through life's hardest battles, and loved him like family.

Some dogs are companions. Others become heroes. Cena was both, and his legacy lives on in every life he helped protect and every heart he touched. ❤️🐾

When a 9-day-old foal named Tye lost his mother, it seemed heartbreak had arrived far too early for the tiny horse. But that same night, an unexpected friendship began to form with a rescue Australian cattle dog named Zip. ❤️

Zip had never shown much interest in the foals born at Karla Swindle’s Alabama farm over the years. But the night Tye’s mother became gravely ill, Zip refused to leave the baby horse’s side. While Swindle stayed up through the night caring for the mare, Zip lay quietly beside the foal in the barn aisle, whining softly as if he understood something was terribly wrong.

By morning, Tye had lost his mother — but he wasn’t alone. From that day forward, Zip became the foal’s constant companion and protector. He raced to the barn every morning to check on Tye, laid beside him while he rested, and comforted him during the difficult weeks that followed.

Over time, Tye grew into a healthy young horse, gaining confidence and strength with Zip always nearby. And once the little foal no longer needed constant comfort, the devoted dog quietly stepped back, seemingly satisfied knowing Tye was going to be okay. Their beautiful bond became a touching reminder that sometimes healing comes from the most unexpected friendships — and that animals often understand love and loss more deeply than we realize. 🐴🐶
