What Is the Role of Accounts Payable?
📌 Accounts payable departments are responsible for more than simply paying bills and invoices; they generally provide at least three critical responsibilities in addition to bill payment.
1. Business Travel Expenses
Any corporation that needs its employees to travel will handle their travel expenditures via the accounts payable department. This may involve making airline, vehicle rental, and hotel arrangements. Following a business trip, the accounts payable department usually resolves the discrepancy between cash given and actual expenditure.
2. Internal Payments
Accounts payable is in charge of distributing internal payments, handling minor cash flow issues, and issuing sales tax exemption certificates. Employees of a company must provide either a manual log report or receipts—or both—to support reimbursement claims.
3. Vendor Payments
Accounts payable is in charge of arranging and managing vendor information, payment conditions, and IRS W-9 forms. Depending on a company's duty structure, accounts payable either processes pre-approved purchase orders or verify transactions after the point of sale.
