Many families prioritize tuition first and retirement second, often to their own long-term disadvantage.

It’s called the “tug-of-war” of financial planning: paying for kids’ futures while making sure your own isn’t underfunded.

Balancing both requires careful coordination.

A new child is a new legacy. A new home is a new asset. A new job is a new income stream.

Each of these milestones should also mean a new look at your estate plan, because your future deserves the same attention as your present.

When selling a business, taxes can play a major role in how much of the proceeds you keep. The structure of the deal matters:

Asset Sale vs. Stock Sale – Different tax rules apply, which can change how gains are reported.

Capital Gains vs. Ordinary Income – Proceeds may be taxed at different rates depending on classification.

Installment Sales – Receiving payments over time may spread out the tax impact.

Knowing these considerations ahead of time can help business owners evaluate their options and prepare for the financial side of an exit.

When looking at retirement plans or stock options, it’s important to understand how vesting schedules work.

They outline when contributions or benefits officially become yours:

• Cliff Vesting – Nothing is vested until a specific date (for example, after 3 years). At that point, all benefits vest at once. Leaving before that date means forfeiting the benefit.

• Graded Vesting – Benefits vest gradually, often in set percentages each year (such as 20% annually over 5 years). This approach allows partial ownership to build over time.

• Immediate Vesting – Ownership applies right away. Any contributions are considered fully vested from day one.

Understanding these schedules can provide clarity about what you currently own and how benefits may accumulate over time.
