Deferred compensation is one of those benefits that looks simple on paper… until you get to the timing.

Many professionals wonder: “When should I actually take it?”

A few pieces often play into the decision like:
• Your tax bracket
• Medicare IRMAA
• How Social Security is taxed
• The flow of income in your first years of retirement

Looking at the next few years of income side-by-side can help you understand how the payout may fit into your overall plan.

Medicare Part A is generally premium-free for most people, so your income doesn’t influence its cost.

But Parts B and D work differently. They use income from two years prior to determine whether you fall into an IRMAA bracket (Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount).

That means if you have a higher-income year due to a deferred compensation payout, it may influence what you pay for those specific Medicare parts in the future.

To sell before or after retirement? That is the question...

Selling before retiring may mean transitioning when you’re still closely involved in the business.

Selling after may give you more time to prepare, but it can also change when income shows up on your tax return.

Since a sale can involve multiple components, lump sums, buyouts, consulting arrangements, etc.

It’s helpful to look at how each structure may influence your income across several years.

For anyone who’s subject to Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), the deadline to take your annual withdrawal is December 31.

It’s a good time to check which of your accounts are included. Traditional IRAs and most employer retirement plans follow RMD rules, while Roth IRAs do not.
