📢 IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR KANSAS VETERANS: Upcoming Sales Tax Exemption Effective July 1, 2026
The Kansas Department of Revenue is introducing a new sales tax exemption specifically for qualified disabled veterans and their families. Enacted under K.S.A. 79-3606h, this significant benefit officially takes effect on July 1, 2026.
Here is what you need to know about eligibility, benefits, and how to apply.
📌 WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
To qualify for this sales tax exemption, individuals must meet the following criteria:
🔹 Residency: Must be a current resident of the state of Kansas.
🔹 Service Status: Must be honorably discharged from active service in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
🔹 Disability Rating: Must be certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to have a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability rating, or be designated as totally disabled/unemployable (TDIU).
🔹 Surviving Spouses: The un-remarried surviving spouse of an eligible veteran remains qualified to receive or continue using this benefit.
📌 WHAT DOES THE EXEMPTION COVER?
The exemption applies to the purchase of tangible personal property and services intended strictly for the personal use of the eligible veteran, their spouse, or surviving spouse.
🔹 Annual Limit: Tax-exempt purchases are capped at $24,000 per calendar year per eligible person.
🔹 Authorized Shoppers: Purchases can be made directly by the veteran, their spouse, or one designated household member authorized to make purchases on their behalf.
🔹 Exclusions: This exemption DOES NOT apply to the purchase of motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, to***co products, or electronic ci******es. It also cannot be applied to any purchases made for business or income-producing purposes.
📌 HOW TO APPLY AND CLAIM THE BENEFIT
Eligible individuals cannot claim the tax exemption without a state-issued ID card. You must apply through the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) portal to receive your official Disabled Veteran Sales Tax Exemption Certificate Card.
(1) Gather Documentation: Prepare your VA Award Letter or VA Benefit Summary Letter demonstrating your 100% permanent disability or TDIU status.
(2) Apply Online: Log into or register with the KDOR Customer Service Center online to submit your application.
(3) Receive Your Card: Once approved, you will receive a driver's license-sized exemption card featuring your unique veteran exemption identification number.
(4) Present at Checkout: To claim the exemption, simply present this card to Kansas retailers at the time of purchase.
