IRS FEDERAL TAX RETURN REFUND DELAYS

Taxpayers may have to wait up to eight weeks to see their tax refunds this year. Prolonged processing times are due to various factors, including the manual processing of millions of returns, continuing weekly batch stimulus payments, and recalculating taxes on unemployment due to mid-season legislation changes.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the IRS operated at a reduced capacity in 2020, which slowed its ability to process tax returns. The IRS is open again and processing mail, tax returns, payments, refunds, and correspondence, but the backlog from the pandemic continues to cause delays for a number of their departments.

The IRS website states it's issuing most refunds in less than 21 days. Still, some are taking longer, including refunds for mailed paper tax returns, especially those that require additional review to determine recovery rebate credit amounts for the first and second stimulus checks or earned income tax credit and child tax credit amounts.

Here's a list of reasons your refund might be delayed:

· Your tax return has errors.

· It's incomplete.

· Your refund has been affected by identity theft or fraud.

· You filed for the earned income tax credit or additional child tax credit.

· Your return needs further review.

· Your return includes Form 8379, injured spouse allocation -- this could take 14 weeks to process.

To check your income tax refund status using the IRS tool Where's My Refund, enter your SSN or ITIN, your filing status, and your exact refund amount, then press submit. If you entered your information correctly, you'll be taken to a page that shows your refund status.

If you submitted your tax return by mail, the IRS says it could take six to eight weeks for your tax refund to arrive. That's where tracking your refund comes in handy.

While you can call the IRS to check your status, the agency's live phone assistance is minimal. Also, the IRS advises that you should only call if it's been 21 days or more since you e-filed your taxes or if the Where's My Refund tool tells you to contact the IRS. For more refund information, visit www.irs.gov/refunds.

IRS Tax Tip

All taxpayers should review their federal withholding each year to make sure they're not having too little or too much tax withheld.

Employees, retirees and self-employed individuals can use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to help decide if they should make a change to their withholding. This online tool guides users, step-by-step through the process of checking their withholding, and provides withholding recommendations to help aim for their desired refund amount when they file next year. Taxpayers can check with their employer to update their withholding or submit a new Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Certificate. Check out

05/18/2021

While most Americans had to file and pay their federal income taxes by the IRS's extended May 17 deadline, Texas residents have until June 15.

The IRS granted a one-month extension from April 15 to May 17 for all individual taxpayers due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Following the disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the IRS announced that affected taxpayers in all 254 Texas counties would receive additional tax relief in the form of a supplementary extension, which also includes the neighboring states of Oklahoma and Louisiana.

For instance, specific deadlines falling on or after February 11, 2021, and before June 15, 2021, are postponed through June 15, 2021.

Taxpayers also have until June 15 to make 2020 IRA contributions.

The June 15, 2021 deadline applies to the first quarter estimated tax payment due on April 15.

It also applies to the quarterly payroll and excise tax returns typically due on April 30, 2021.

In addition, it applies to tax-exempt organizations operating on a calendar-year basis that have a 2020 return due on May 17, 2021.

Penalties on deposits due on or after February 11, 2021, and before February 26, 2021, will be abated as long as the taxpayer made the tax deposit by February 26, 2021. Suppose an affected taxpayer receives a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS with an original or extended filing, payment, or deposit due date that falls within the postponement period. In that case, the taxpayer should call the telephone number on the notice to have the IRS abate the penalty.

The IRS has automatically identified taxpayers located in the covered disaster area and has applied its filing and payment relief. But affected taxpayers who reside or have a business located outside the covered disaster area should call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 to request this tax relief.

The penalty for not filing your taxes on time is 5% of your unpaid taxes for each month that the return is late, maxing out at 25%. For every month you fail to pay, the IRS will charge you 0.5%, up to 25%. For any month that you owe both penalties, the failure to file amount is reduced by the failure to pay the amount. Interest also builds up daily, equal to the federal short-term rate, plus 3%.

If you expect to receive a tax refund, there is no punishment for not filing your federal return on time, but you are depriving yourself of the funds that the IRS has set aside for you.

If a taxpayer is unable to file by the June 15 deadline, the firm may request an extension on your behalf. Taxpayers must also file extension requests by June 15. Please contact the office for additional extension information or if you have any questions or concerns.

A recent notice from the IRS provides insight into why some people may experience a longer than average wait for their refunds.
Noted reasons, according to the agency, for refund delays include:

1. Tax returns that need a correction due to changes made by the Recovery Rebate Credit — a tax credit adjustment for people who were owed more stimulus money.

2. Verification of income for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC).

To find the status of your tax refund, check out https://www.irs.gov/refunds. Additional information on tax return delays may be found in the link below.

IR-2021-60, March 18, 2021 — The Internal Revenue Service today reminds taxpayers that the most convenient way to check on a tax refund is by using the Where’s My Refund? tool at IRS.gov or through the IRS2Go Mobile App.

04/28/2021

If you’re eligible and didn’t receive the first two Economic Impact Payments, or you didn’t get the full amount you’re eligible for, you may be able to claim the recovery rebate credit.

03/11/2021

The provision would temporarily increase the child tax credit to $3,000 or $3,600 per child for most families and have 50% of it paid in advance by the IRS.
