🚨 SCAM ALERT MONDAY

Scammers Don't Take Mondays Off — And Neither Should Your Guard.

One of the easiest ways to protect yourself from scams is to recognize a simple warning sign:

Someone wants you to act RIGHT NOW.

Scammers create urgency because they don't want you to have time to think, ask questions, or check their story.

🚩 "You have to pay today."
🚩 "Don't tell anyone."
🚩 "Your account will be closed if you don't act now."
🚩 "This offer is only available for the next few minutes."

Stop. Slow down. Verify.

A legitimate business or organization should not object when you take time to make sure you're making the right decision.

💡 Remember: Pressure is a tactic. Taking your time is protection.

Share this post with an older adult, family member, or friend who could benefit from the reminder.

📚 Wednesday Consumer Tip

5 Documents Every Adult Should Have

Estate planning isn't just for retirees or the wealthy. Every adult should have these essential documents in place:

📄 Last Will and Testament – Specifies how your assets will be distributed and can name guardians for minor children.

📁 Durable Financial Power of Attorney – Authorizes someone you trust to handle financial matters if you're unable to do so.

🏥 Health Care Power of Attorney – Designates a person to make medical decisions on your behalf if you cannot.

🩺 Advance Health Care Directive (Living Will) – Outlines your wishes regarding medical treatment and end-of-life care.

📋 Beneficiary Designations – Review your retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and payable-on-death accounts regularly to ensure they reflect your current wishes.

Taking time to prepare these documents today can provide peace of mind and help protect your loved ones from unnecessary stress in the future.

Before making any estate planning decisions, consult with a qualified estate planning attorney to ensure your documents reflect your unique needs and comply with your state's laws.

📚 Wednesday Consumer Tip

Do You Need a Will, a Trust, or Both?

Many people assume a will and a trust do the same thing—but they serve different purposes.

Here's a simple way to think about it:

📄 A Will helps ensure your assets are distributed according to your wishes after you pass away and allows you to name guardians for minor children.

📁 A Trust can help your loved ones avoid probate, provide greater privacy, and give you more control over how and when assets are distributed.

The right estate plan depends on your unique financial situation, family, and long-term goals.

The biggest mistake isn't choosing the wrong option—it's having no estate plan at all.

Take time to learn the differences and speak with a qualified estate planning attorney to determine what's best for you and your family.

🚨 SCAM ALERT: The Way Someone Asks You to Pay Can Tell You It's a Scam

If someone contacts you unexpectedly and insists you can only pay using one of these methods, it's a major red flag:

💸 Bank transfer
💸 Wire transfer
🪙 Cryptocurrency
📱 Payment app
🎁 Gift cards

Scammers prefer these payment methods because they're difficult—or even impossible—to reverse once your money is sent. The FTC reports that consumers lost billions of dollars to scams involving bank transfers and cryptocurrency alone.

Protect Yourself:

✅ Never send money just because someone says you must use a specific payment method.
✅ Verify the company or person's identity before paying.
✅ Whenever possible, pay with a credit card, which offers stronger fraud protections.
✅ If you think you've paid a scammer, contact your payment provider immediately to see if the transaction can be stopped or reversed.

Remember: Legitimate businesses give you payment options. Scammers demand the one that's hardest to recover.

NAOSA – Protecting Consumers. Promoting Ethical Professionals.

Let’s say someone contacts you unexpectedly and says you have to pay to fix a problem, get a prize, or something else. But then they say the only way to pay is by bank transfer, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, payment app, or gift card. Well, reports to the FTC show that’s a scam.

Don't Sign Anything You Don't Fully Understand

Whether it's a contract for home repairs, a financial product, senior living, or home care services, never feel pressured to sign on the spot.

A trustworthy professional will:
✔ Take the time to answer your questions.
✔ Encourage you to review the agreement carefully.
✔ Respect your decision if you want a family member or trusted advisor to look it over first.

If someone tells you:
❌ "This offer expires today."
❌ "You don't need to read all the paperwork."
❌ "Just sign here."
..consider it a warning sign.

The best decisions are informed decisions.

At NAOSA, we believe consumers deserve honest information, ethical professionals, and the confidence to make choices that are right for them.

🚨 SCAM ALERT

Beware of "Grandparent" Emergency Scams

Scammers are calling older adults pretending to be a grandchild or another family member in trouble.

They may say they've been:
🚗 In a car accident
👮 Arrested and need bail money
🏥 Injured and need emergency funds

They often beg you to keep it a secret and ask you to send money immediately through gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment apps.

Protect Yourself:

✅ Hang up and contact your family member directly using a number you already have.
✅ Never send money because of a phone call alone.
✅ Verify the story with another trusted relative.
✅ Remember: Legitimate law enforcement and hospitals do not demand immediate payment over the phone.

When someone pressures you to act immediately, it's time to slow down.

Help protect the older adults in your life by sharing this post.
