Forbes names Belize a top destination for Americans seeking a better life abroad
Belize has been named one of the best places for Americans to retire or relocate in 2025, according to a newly released Forbes report. Citing lower costs of living, a welcoming residency program, and an English-speaking environment, the publication highlighted Belize as a practical and appealing option for U.S. citizens seeking to escape high expenses and political division.
Belize stands apart from many other countries featured on Forbes’ Best Places to Retire Abroad in 2025 list. With English as the official language, no language barrier exists for retirees, digital nomads, or remote workers. And under Belize’s Qualified Retirement Program (QRP), Americans 45 and older can gain permanent residency by showing just $2,000 USD in monthly income—approximately $24,000 annually.
The report also pointed to Belize’s tropical beauty, proximity to the U.S., and laid-back lifestyle as major factors drawing Americans to destinations like Ambergris Caye, Placencia, Caye Caulker, and Corozal. These areas offer lower costs on housing, food, and transportation, allowing retirees to live well on modest budgets.
Healthcare in Belize is described as basic in the report, but many expats supplement it with private insurance or travel back to the U.S. for major procedures—just a two-hour flight from Belize City to Houston. And with crime generally limited to Belize City, many of the country’s tourist-friendly towns remain peaceful and safe.
In a time of rising costs and growing political discontent, Forbes reports that Belize offers Americans an increasingly rare combination: simplicity, affordability, and peace of mind.
