UPDATE: The IRS will continue to accept paper checks for amounts due with 2025 income tax returns, but is strongly encouraging switching to electronic payments, as acceptance of paper checks will be discontinued during 2026/2027. As of now all quarterly estimated tax payments must be made electronically.

01/26/2026

A few things to be aware of for income tax filing this year:

1. If you owe tax with your 2025 tax return or if you need to pay 2026 quarterly estimated tax payments, the IRS will no longer be accepting paper checks. Be prepared to provide your bank account info to your tax preparer if you have not already, so direct debit can be setup for the amount you owe. Bank name, routing number, and account number are needed. We can also setup scheduled estimated payments through our tax software. The IRS is also asking for all refunds to be directly deposited into bank accounts. Refunds by check will be significantly delayed.

There is another system to pay the IRS online through the IRS website for the amount you owe and quarterly estimates, that also allows you to pay with a credit card. Just be aware that this system will charge additional fees, and you will need to set that up on your own.

2. For 2025 income tax returns - there are new deductions and
adjustments to income available for seniors, qualified overtime, tip income, and car loan interest on new cars purchased in 2025. Please make sure to bring in the necesary information if any of these new items apply to you.

Specific to overtime, please make sure your employer provides you with the necessary information, your tax preparer cannot estimate this or calculate this for you. This is not required to be shown on your 2025 W-2, so you may need to ask for year-end check stubs or other intormation from your employer.

3. E-filing officially opened today for 2025 income tax returns - some returns will be delayed as the IRS and the state finalize tax forms. As always, please wait until you receive all of your relevant tax information prior to delivering your materials for tax preparation.

We’d like to congratulate Taryn Grasser and Morgan Hundley on earning their Master’s Degrees in Accounting last weekend. We’d also like to welcome them as the newest full time accountants at our firm. They have both been valuable interns for the past few years, so we are very excited that they decided to stick around and join our team! Congrats to you both!

A note to go along with our announcement yesterday - We are still happy to service our clients that have used our Peru office in the past, but unfortunately we will no longer have a physical presence there. Our other two office locations will remain open and we often accept tax documents by mail or email to complete tax returns.

We have decided to permanently close our Peru office at 1718 Peoria St. Today will be the last day it will be open. Our offices in Granville and Princeton will remain open at their regular hours. Please direct any questions to our Granville office 815-339-6630.

These are the firm peer review reports that we are required to share online. The “pass” rating indicates that our firm is completing high quality audits with no findings from our reviewer. It’s a grueling process, so I’m proud of our team for this accomplishment!

The IRS has sent out letters letting you know how much advanced Child Tax Credit you received during the year. The letters should have arrived last week. The IRS will also be sending out a letter soon informing you of how much your stimulus payment was back in March or April of last year. The letters kind of look like junk mail, but please don't throw them away. It is very important that we get these letters and the that the proper amounts are recorded on your tax return. If they aren't the refund delays will be very long this year, and communication with the IRS is nearly impossible at this time.

12/29/2021

The IRS is starting to send out letters that will show the amount of advanced child tax credit and the amount of the stimulus payment you received in April of 2021. This information will be needed to complete your 2021 tax return, so make sure you provide it to whoever does your taxes, or keep it if you do your own. The letters are starting to go out now, and will continue through January.

Advance Child Tax Credit (feel free to share)
I have been getting a lot of questions about this. Payments are being paid on the 15th until December. Keep in mind, this is an advance on the child tax credit so receiving the payments now will likely reduce your refund come tax season. The credit has increased from $2,000/ child to $3,000 (ages 6-17) and $3,600 (ages 0-5) for incomes under $150,000 (married) or $112,500 (single). If your income is over the threshold, you will still receive $2k/kid (phases out at $200k single or $400k married). The advance payments are those amounts divided by 12 months. So at most you are only receiving half of the credit and will receive the remainder at tax season.
Parents of 17 year olds will receive the credit for 2021 🎉.
For parents who don't claim their children every year, keep in mind you might receive the advance and need to pay it back depending on if it's "your year".
For the sanity of your tax preparer, please keep track of how much you receive in 2021. If we have the wrong amounts it will likely delay your refund.
The IRS has stated both spouses need to unenroll.
You can still "unenroll" for the rest of the year.
How to Unenroll
To unenroll, go to the IRS.gov, select "get details about child tax credit", select "manage payments", select "manage advance payments".
It took me less than ten minutes to unenroll. I personally found it much easier to create an IRS account than use the ID.me. So select "Sign in with an existing IRS account". From there you create an account. You need to input some personal info including like the last 8 digits of a credit card or loan to verify identity. Once you have created the account, you can login and unenroll.
