A legacy doesn’t always look the same.

For some, it’s a scholarship that carries a family name forward. For others, it’s preserving land, history, or community programs.

Each choice tells a story about what you value most.

Many people assume charitable bequests have to be set as a dollar figure. But tying your gift to a percentage of your estate allows it to grow or shrink with your overall assets.

This flexibility can help balance generosity while making sure your giving reflects your resources at the time it’s needed most.

Harvard's Michael Norton has studied giving for more than 15 years. One of his findings sticks with me: people consistently predict that spending on themselves will make them happier, and they're consistently wrong. Spending on someone else wins.

We tend to underestimate how much we get back from giving. Worth remembering as our local nonprofits head into their busiest season.

Research shows that acts of generosity, like gift-giving, are contagious and increase happiness. Giving and receiving are also fundamental for good relationships.

For many families, generosity comes with a question:

How can I support causes I care about without compromising long-term financial stability?

Finding the right balance often means exploring tools like donor-advised funds, charitable trusts, or Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs).

The recent fires in Nevada County are an important reminder that emergencies can develop quickly, and preparation matters long before they do.

With the Maidu and Jackson fires now extinguished, this National Preparedness Month is a good time to review the steps you and your family would take if an emergency affected your community. Know your local risks, make an emergency plan, keep essential supplies on hand, and know where to turn for reliable updates.

A little preparation today can make it easier to respond when the unexpected happens.

Nevada County fire crews were hard at work to extinguish a series of vegetation fires in the region on Tuesday and Wednesday, including the Maidu Fire near the Eric Rood
