Have you seen the headlines saying the Trump administration is ending Medicare Part D subsidies?

Let’s separate fact from fiction.

FICTION:
The government is taking away your Medicare prescription drug benefits.

FACT:
Your Medicare drug coverage is not being eliminated.

Here’s what actually happened.

In 2025, Medicare made one of the biggest changes to Part D in years. It eliminated the “donut hole” and put a yearly limit on what people pay out of pocket for covered prescription drugs.

That was great news for people on Medicare.

The challenge was that insurance companies suddenly became responsible for paying a larger share of prescription drug costs. No one knew exactly how much those changes would cost or how high premiums might need to be.

To help prevent large premium increases while insurance companies adjusted, Medicare created a temporary program that sent additional payments to the insurance companies. The goal was to keep premiums more stable while everyone learned what the new system would cost.

Now the Trump administration has announced that the temporary program will end after 2026.

The administration says the program has done its job, insurance companies now have enough experience to price their plans without extra government payments, and continuing the program would amount to an unnecessary taxpayer-funded subsidy for insurance companies. CMS also says it expects most beneficiaries to see premium increases of less than $10 per month, although final plan premiums won’t be known until this fall.

So what does that mean for you?

It could mean that some Part D plans have higher monthly premiums in 2027.

It does not mean your Medicare drug benefit is going away.

It does not mean the annual out-of-pocket cap is going away but it is increasing to $2400.

It does not mean Extra Help is ending.

Right now, no one knows exactly what each 2027 Part D plan will cost. Insurance companies have submitted their plans, and Medicare is reviewing them. We’ll know much more once the final plans are released this fall.

This is a good reminder not to panic when you see Medicare headlines. Often, the headline only tells part of the story.

When the 2027 plans are released, we’ll help you compare your options and choose the plan that fits your needs.

We’re living longer, and that’s something to celebrate! But a longer life,
especially years when you aren’t receiving a paycheck, means making sure your financial
stability lasts. Understanding tools like annuities can help you prepare with confidence.
Because preparing for a long life requires more than savings. It requires strategy.
