🐷💚 A Smart Tax Strategy Many Business Owners Overlook
Paying your kids can make great business sense!
Did you know that if your business is a sole proprietorship, your child can earn up to $16,100 in wages during 2026 and generally owe no federal income tax because that amount is covered by the standard deduction for a single filer?
Here are a few reasons business owners love this strategy:
✅ Wages paid to your child who is under age 18 are generally exempt from Social Security and Medicare (F**A) taxes.
✅ Wages paid to your child who is under age 21 are generally exempt from FUTA (federal unemployment) tax.
✅ The wages are generally deductible as a business expense to your business.
Of course, there are rules:
📋 The child must perform real work for the business.
📋 The pay must be reasonable for the work performed.
📋 You must maintain proper documentation, including timesheets, payroll records, and job descriptions.
Example:
If your Schedule C business pays your 15-year-old child $10,000 during 2026 for legitimate work such as social media, filing, scanning, office cleaning, data entry, or website updates:
✅ The business deducts the $10,000 as a business expense.
✅ The child generally pays no federal income tax if total earned income remains below the standard deduction.
✅ No F**A taxes apply because the child is under 18 and works for your sole proprietorship.
And here's another bonus...
💰 Because the child has earned income, they may also be eligible to contribute to a Roth IRA, helping them build potentially decades of tax-free growth while learning valuable money lessons at a young age.
