For decades, investors have relied on bonds to provide stability and diversification when stocks become volatile. But has that relationship changed? In this week's Market Update, we examine how portfolios that historically offered attractive risk-adjusted returns have behaved differently since 2021. We discuss the impact of rising interest rates, why bond values can fall as yields rise, and why the type and maturity of bonds an investor owns matters. We also look at why investors shouldn't necessarily abandon bonds - but may need to think more carefully about how bonds fit into their overall investment strategy. For investors approaching or living in retirement, the conversation raises an important question: is your bond allocation actually doing what you expect it to do?

The stock market continues to move higher, earnings have been strong, and market breadth remains encouraging—but there is another story developing underneath the surface. In the latest Market Update, Chris and Jesse examine the recent strength in inflation-sensitive assets including gold, commodities, Bitcoin, and Ethereum. At the same time, they look at long-term interest rates and the historically weak returns investors have experienced from long-duration bonds over extended periods. The question isn't whether inflation is suddenly returning or whether rates are guaranteed to rise. Instead, it's whether these different market signals can continue moving in opposite directions indefinitely. Strong earnings can certainly support stocks, but inflation and interest rates remain important pieces of the larger market picture. This is why looking beyond the daily headlines—and understanding how different parts of the market interact—can be so valuable for long-term investors.

A rising market can be a wonderful thing—but it can also create a dangerous illusion. Charlie Munger's famous "duck on a pond" analogy reminds us that when the pond rises, the duck can start believing it's the reason it's rising. In this week's Market Update, Chris and Jesse look at the S&P 500's unusually strong recent returns and compare today's environment with historical periods of exceptional market performance. The three-year annualized return is currently well above the S&P 500's long-term historical average. That doesn't mean a correction is around the corner, and it certainly doesn't mean history will repeat itself. But it does raise an important question for investors: Do you have a plan if returns aren't as strong in the years ahead? Because markets have a way of humbling even the most confident investors.

When most people think about the stock market, they often focus on a handful of the largest technology companies. But this week's Market Update highlights a different story—one that suggests the market may actually be healthier than many investors realize. While the Magnificent Seven continue to dominate headlines, companies across industrials, financials, healthcare, utilities, and other sectors are quietly contributing to market performance. Chris and Jesse explain why the Equal Weight S&P 500 has been outperforming this year, what history can teach us about broad market participation, and why understanding what you own has never been more important. A broader market isn't a guarantee of future returns, but it can be an encouraging sign of improving market strength beneath the surface.

Artificial intelligence has become one of the biggest investment stories of the decade—but is the technology meeting expectations in the real world? While earnings season continues to produce encouraging results and more stocks are participating in the market's advance, businesses are still discovering that AI often requires significant human oversight to deliver reliable results. In this week's Market Update, we discuss why improving market breadth remains a positive sign, how AI implementation is unfolding in practice, and why accountability still matters when technology becomes part of your workflow. We also examine what these trends could mean for the largest technology companies and investor expectations moving forward. Sometimes the most important investment question isn't what's possible tomorrow—it's what's actually working today.

Earnings season continues to deliver encouraging news, with companies beating expectations by an even wider margin than many analysts anticipated. But one of the biggest stories this week isn't just strong earnings—it's the changing leadership within the market. Apple has quietly reached a new all-time high despite receiving far less attention than many AI-focused companies, while bank stocks have broken above levels that have held for nearly 20 years. Could this be the beginning of a broader shift in market leadership? In this week's Market Update, we discuss what these developments may signal for investors and why looking beneath the surface often reveals opportunities that headlines miss. Markets are constantly evolving, and understanding those shifts can be just as important as following the latest news.

We're excited to welcome Mitchell O'Connor to the team as one of our summer interns!

Born and raised in Greenville, Mitchell is a rising junior at Clemson University, where he is double-majoring in Finance and Economics. His interest in financial management began in ninth grade after taking a Ramsey Education course that introduced him to the importance of responsible money management and the long-term benefits of building strong financial habits early. Since then, that passion has continued to grow and has shaped both his academic journey and career aspirations.

When he's not studying or working, Mitchell enjoys spending time outdoors and staying active. Whether it's lifting, cycling, playing disc golf, or taking on just about any outdoor activity, he enjoys finding new ways to stay engaged and challenged.

We're excited to have Mitchell on the team this summer and look forward to seeing all he'll accomplish. Welcome aboard, Mitchell—and **Go Tigers!** 🐅
