Buyers discount what leaves with you and pay a premium for what stays.

Save this checklist. Every item on it is something you can build on purpose, in the years before you ever think about selling.

If the first tax conversation of the year happens in spring, it's not planning. It's paperwork.

Entity structure, retirement contributions, equipment timing, income shifting: every one of those levers closes on December 31. Proactive beats reactive, every single year.

A practice can pay you very well for years and still sell for less than you'd expect.

Profit is what it pays you now. Value is what someone else will pay for it later. The gap between the two is yours to close, and closing it doesn't mean selling anything or changing your timeline.

Two practices. Same collections, same chairs, same patients through the door. One sells for meaningfully more.

The difference isn't dentistry. It's structure. A team that runs the schedule without you. Systems that are written down. Patients loyal to the practice, not just to you.

Buyers pay for what keeps working after you hand over the keys. Find out where you stand, link in bio.

Your biggest asset probably isn't your portfolio. It's the practice you walk into every morning, and it's the one number most owners have never measured.

It funds most of your retirement, so it's worth knowing the number. Free valuation link in bio.

Most dentists can quote their production numbers to the dollar. Far fewer can tell you what the practice itself is worth, and it's usually the biggest asset they own.

We built a free 2-minute valuation tool for dental practice owners. No books required, nothing to look up. Link in bio.

Work hard, play hard! 🎨🖌️

Our team has been putting in the work, so today we traded screen time and spreadsheets for paintbrushes and got to channel our inner Picasso! It was a fun way to unwind, get creative, and enjoy some well-earned team time together!

Every dentist we work with eventually asks the same question: am I on track?

The honest answer depends on which decade you're in.

In your 30s, the goal is structural. Get the practice S-corp humming, max the 401(k), build the emergency cash buffer so practice volatility doesn't wreck your personal finances.

In your 40s, the lift gets heavier. This is the decade where defined benefit plans usually start making sense, where retirement contributions should be in the range of 1-2x your annual income, and where the gap between dentists who plan and dentists who don't starts compounding visibly.

In your 50s, the conversation shifts to the practice itself. The practice is usually your biggest asset by far. Is it set up to actually convert into retirement income? That's a different question than whether it's profitable today.

We broke it down decade by decade: https://coreadvisors.com/post/how-much-should-dentists-have-in-retirement-savings/

Read this detailed guide on how much should dentists have in retirement savings classified by decades. This lets you have a benchmark and see if you have enough to retire on time.

If you're an associate dentist with an offer on the table, the comp structure matters more than the headline number.

The three most common structures and what they actually mean:

✔️ Daily rate ($600-$900/day): predictable, but caps your upside completely. Fine for new grads, costly for productive associates 2-3 years in.

✔️ Percentage of production (28-32%): you eat the slow days, but you keep the upside on big production. Watch the lab fee deduction language — some contracts deduct lab off the top, some don't.

✔️ Percentage of collections (30-35%): your pay depends on the practice's billing department, not just your chair. Bad billing = your problem.

The financial planning question isn't which is best. It's which fits your trajectory. New grads with $400K in student debt benefit from predictability. Associates planning to own in 3-5 years should be banking the variance.

Either way, the time to set up an HSA, max your retirement contributions, and start tracking your tax basis is your first year as an associate, not your tenth.
