The best time for year-end tax planning isn’t December 30.

There are decisions business owners can still make before year-end that may affect their 2026 tax picture.

The key is knowing what deserves attention before the calendar runs out.

We put together a 2026 Year-End Tax Checklist with the business and individual items worth reviewing now.

Download the checklist and see what belongs on your year-end list. https://langallancpa.com/year-end-tax-checklists

Is Your Construction Business Ready for the Next Slowdown?

Construction rarely follows a straight line.

Seasonal changes, project delays, and shifting material costs can quickly affect your bottom line. Planning ahead with accurate financial reporting and forecasting can help your business stay on solid ground, no matter what the market brings.

My son has gone away to college this fall and luckily got a scholarship. Does this mean he’s no longer my dependent?

A student who is under age 24 at the end of the year can still qualify as your child for tax purposes if they were a full-time student for at least five months during the year.

The student must also meet the relationship and residency requirements. https://ow.ly/SUSA50ZUywu

Avoid missing out on business opportunities. Start your year-end planning now.

What can you do?
• Review Your Year-to-Date Financial Performance
• Identify Year-End Tax Planning Opportunities
• Review Cash Flow
• Prepare for the Unexpected
• Set Q4 Priorities and Begin Planning for Next Year

You should also consider how expected growth, hiring, capital purchases, owner compensation, and changes in taxable income may affect their year-end position. https://langallancpa.com/year-end-business-planning

I'll be honest, revenue used to be the first number I'd ask clients about, too.

Now it's usually one of the last.

I'd rather know their gross margin trend, their revenue per employee, and which customers are profitable. Those numbers tell the real story.

Growth that costs more than it earns isn't really growth. It's just bigger expenses with better marketing.

I put together the KPIs worth checking monthly, and the ones that separate businesses that are scaling well from those that are just getting more expensive. https://langallancpa.com/is-your-business-growth-getting-more-expensive

Are you scaling well, or are things just getting more expensive?

The IRS extended tax relief for farmers and ranchers in 49 states and other regions affected by drought conditions between Sept.1, 2025 and Aug. 31, 2026.

The tax relief gives eligible farmers and ranchers more time to meet certain federal tax obligations when drought conditions force the sale of livestock.

Learn more about the areas that qualify for this relief and examples of how the provision works. https://ow.ly/Tehu50ZUyqe

Are you using a 2025 tax strategy in a 2026 tax environment?

It’s easy to repeat what worked last year. But several rules have changed, including provisions affecting charitable deductions, estate and gift planning, business deductions, SALT, and depreciation.

That doesn’t mean you need a completely new strategy. It does mean it's worth checking assumptions. https://langallancpa.com/new-tax-rules-could-affect-the-moves-you-make-before-year-end

This overview does a nice job of separating the changes from the bigger question: Which ones might affect your decisions?

Have these 2026 changes caused you to rethink anything you planned to do this year?

Have you started forecasting for 2027 yet?

A good time to start forecasting for 2027 is late Q3 into early Q4.

This gives you time to look at how 2026 is going, plan your cash flow, and set realistic goals and a budget before the new year. https://langallancpa.com/are-financial-forecasts-reliable

Q4 is here. Do you know these 4 numbers?

1. Are you profitable?
2. How much cash do you have?
3. How much do customers owe you?
4. What bills are coming due?

If you can’t answer all four, check your financial reports before Q4 begins, not at year end.

Your numbers can’t help you make better decisions if you don’t know what they’re telling you.

Which number are you watching most closely heading into Q4?

Being with a bigger accounting firm doesn’t always mean you’re getting more.

I’ve talked with business owners and CFOs who are paying higher fees but spending more time managing the relationship.

They’re explaining their business to new people. Waiting too long for answers. Or talking about tax planning after the decisions have already been made.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the firm is doing poor work. It may mean the relationship no longer fits the business.

If your company has grown or changed, it’s worth occasionally asking: "Is our accounting firm still giving us what we need?"

We created a short worksheet to help you evaluate that question. See how your CPA relationship measures up. https://langallancpa.com/is-your-accounting-firm-still-the-right-fit
