The car breaks down. The roof needs replacing. A family member needs help. An unexpected expense shows up. Or maybe your vision of retirement looks completely different from your friend's. John and Sarah of Exact Wealth discuss why a strong retirement strategy should leave room for real life.

Some of the questions worth thinking about:
• How much should you keep in reserve?
• When does it make sense to pay cash for a major purchase?
• How should couples approach helping family?
• Should you lend retirement money to a friend?
• Do married couples need to combine their finances?
• What should you consider before moving in with family?
• What if your ideal retirement looks nothing like someone else's?

One of the biggest takeaways: Don't compare your retirement to someone else's. Build a plan around the life you want to live. A resilient retirement plan isn't one where nothing goes wrong. It's one that has room for the unexpected. Ready to take a closer look at your retirement plan? Call (800) 326-5688 or text “EXACT” to 600 700.

Today is the start of the Medicare Open Enrollment period, which runs October 15th to December 7th annually for those already on Medicare. Now is the time to check your plan for any changes in co-pays, deductibles, coverages, doctors, covered medications… and compare costs. You can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan, go back to Original Medicare, add vision or dental, or make other choices for the 2027 benefit year. And remember, your Medicare premium is based on your income from two years prior.

Healthcare costs are on the rise, and your retirement plan should help ensure you have adequate funds dedicated to this, especially as you get older. Fidelity’s newest projections are $185,500 needed during retirement for healthcare by the average person who has reached age 65. This includes Medicare premiums, copayments, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket costs, but does not include long-term care: https://ow.ly/Gmjo50ZSUmu

Your retirement income could affect your Medicare premiums.

One detail many retirees may overlook is that Medicare can use income from two years earlier when determining certain premium amounts. That means the way you take retirement distributions today could have implications for future Medicare costs. John Becker discusses some of the income sources that can factor in the equation, including:

• IRA and 401(k) distributions
• Capital gains
• Interest and dividends
• Pension income
• Taxable portions of Social Security
• How distribution decisions may affect Medicare premiums

Retirement planning isn't just about how much income you have, it's also about understanding the potential ripple effects of your decisions. Have questions about your retirement income or Medicare? Reach out and start the conversation.

Can you have too much money sitting in reserve? According to Sarah and John of Exact Wealth, the answer can be yes, but it depends on why you're holding it and what it's intended to accomplish. For couples, having an emergency plan isn't just about having cash available. It's also about being on the same page about:

• Major purchases like a new car
• Unexpected medical expenses
• Helping family members
• How much do you keep in cash or conservative accounts
• What each portion of your savings is earmarked for

The goal isn't simply to keep as much cash as possible. It's to have a plan for your reserves and make sure every dollar has a purpose. Have questions about your emergency fund or overall financial plan? Reach out today!
