IRS Opens 2026 Tax Filing Season: The IRS officially opened the 2026 tax filing season on 1/26/26, beginning to accept and process 2025 individual income tax returns. The agency expects to receive approximately 164 million returns by the 4/15/26 deadline. This year marks the 40th anniversary of electronic filing, and the IRS continues to encourage taxpayers to e-file and use direct deposit for the fastest refund processing. In a significant change, under Executive Order 14247, the agency began phasing out paper checks on 9/30/25, meaning most taxpayers must now use direct deposit to receive refunds. While most refunds are issued in less than 21 days, early filers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) should expect refunds by 3/2/26.

📢 Major Tax Update for Partnerships in the Fifth Circuit
The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has issued a big decision on self‑employment (SECA) taxes. In Sirius Solutions (2026), the court ruled that a “limited partner” is defined by state‑law limited liability—not by whether the partner is a passive investor.
🔍 What this means:
Limited partners in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi may be able to exclude their distributive share of income from SECA tax—even if they’re active in the business.
Guaranteed payments for services are still subject to SECA tax.
Some taxpayers may have refund opportunities if their statute of limitations is still open.
Similar cases in other circuits could create a circuit split, potentially sending the issue to the Supreme Court.
💡 Bottom line: Partnerships that rely on limited partner classifications should revisit their SECA positions. This ruling could have major implications across consulting, professional services, private equity, and other partnership-driven industries.
