At Saunders Tax & Accounting, we spend a lot of time talking numbers — but our hearts are just as invested in the people behind them. 💛

Today, we're beaming with pride to celebrate Mattingly Golden, son of Tax Manager Jessica Golden, on earning his Eagle Scout! Mattingly built a beautiful rainbow bridge for Humane Society of Washington County — a project that reflects the kind of leadership, dedication, and compassion we all hope to see in the next generation.

We were honored to be a sponsor this endeavor and are committed to this community in both big and small ways.

The U.S. uses a progressive tax system—meaning as your income increases, only the additional dollars are taxed at higher rates, not your entire income. There are seven federal tax brackets, ranging from 10% to 37%.

Proactive tax planning is how you legally reduce your tax burden by using the tax code to your advantage. And it happens now—not at filing time—by putting smart strategies in place before year-end.

💡 Think you can’t beat the IRS?

An Ohio taxpayer refused to give up after the IRS denied her tax credits. What started as a dispute over less than $8,000 ended with the IRS paying the full claim… plus more than $34,000 in attorney fees. Article: https://buff.ly/Gr2tsKS

The lesson isn’t that every dispute should go to court.

It’s that understanding tax law—and the procedures for resolving disputes—can make all the difference.

Sometimes the biggest advantage isn’t the size of your case… it’s having the right tax professional in your corner.

💰 Most taxpayers will never receive a letter from the IRS saying, “You may have overpaid us during COVID.”

That responsibility falls on the taxpayer.

If you or your business paid IRS penalties or interest during the pandemic years, now is the time to review your records.

This may apply to more than just tax returns, including payroll filings and other federal filings during the COVID disaster period.

⏳ The deadline to preserve a potential claim is July 10, 2026.

You may not have a claim… but if you do, it needs to be protected before time runs out.

News they don't want you to know...

If you or your business paid IRS penalties or interest between March 2020 and May 2023, there's something you need to know — and act on — before July 10, 2026.

A federal court ruling (Kwong v. United States) found the IRS may have used incorrect deadlines when assessing pandemic-era penalties and interest. That could mean you were overcharged.

This applies to individual returns, business filings, payroll taxes, and nonprofit returns alike.

The catch: a protective claim must be filed by July 10, 2026, or the right to any refund is gone permanently.

Not everyone qualifies, but the only way to know is to check.

Tax history has some surprising moments.

When the IRS started requiring Social Security numbers for dependent claims in the late 1980s, millions of previously claimed children were no longer listed on tax returns almost overnight.

It became one of the most dramatic examples of how compliance rules can significantly impact reporting and tax administration.
