Your fourth-quarter estimated tax payment is due January 15, 2027. That is soon.

If your income changed this year, the amount you paid in April may no longer match where your business is now. Underpaying can lead to penalties, and January is a stressful time to discover that.

Here is what helps: project your fourth-quarter profit now, compare it with what you have already paid, and adjust your remaining payment or withholding while you still have time.

You do not need a perfect forecast. A reasonable estimate based on real numbers is far better than guessing in January.

If you'd like a second set of eyes on your year-end numbers before the payment is due, we're glad to help. Book a call and we'll walk through it together.

None of these automatically means your salary is wrong.

If you pay yourself through payroll, changes like shifting profits, a different business structure, or a long gap since your last review are good prompts to take a closer look. Think of them as reminders to pause and ask whether your compensation still fits where your business is today.

The goal is not to panic, but to stay informed and ahead of the calendar. Every situation is different, so talk with a tax professional, and comment "taxes" below if you'd like help with tax planning or preparation.

Planning an equipment purchase before year-end? It may be worth reviewing your tax options before December 31.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act restored 100% bonus depreciation for qualifying assets acquired after January 19, 2025. It also expanded Section 179 to cover HVAC systems, roofs, and other property types that were previously excluded.

That doesn’t mean every purchase automatically qualifies. Timing, eligibility, business-use percentage, and cash flow all matter. In general, property needs to be placed in service by year-end to be considered for this tax year.

If you’re an HVAC, electrical, or plumbing contractor in Maryland, DC, or Virginia, let’s review your plans before you commit. Book a year-end planning call with us.

Ask your tax professional the right questions before the year ends.

Many business owners wait until tax season to think about taxes, but by then the year is over, the books are closed, and most of the decisions that could have made a difference are already made. Tax planning works best before December 31, while you still have time to act.

Want accurate books ready for that conversation? Comment "taxes" below to learn more about our services.

Your hourly labor rate isn’t the full cost of labor.

Per ServiceTitan 2026 research, 60% of contractors say labor and overhead costs are their biggest business risk, outranking material costs and a possible recession.

But when you price a job, are you accounting for more than wages? Payroll taxes, benefits, workers’ compensation, and overhead all add to the true cost of getting the work done. If those costs aren’t reflected in your job costing, your pricing can quietly miss the mark.

Job costing helps show which services are actually making money, and where you may need a closer look at your pricing.

If you’re an HVAC, electrical, or plumbing contractor in Maryland, DC, or Virginia, we’re happy to talk about job costing and bookkeeping support.

It's !

This month is a chance to pause and recognize the women who are building, leading, and growing businesses across every industry. Women business owners launch law practices, run construction and MEP companies, open shops, offer professional services, and create jobs in their communities. Many do it while juggling clients, teams, families, and a to-do list that never seems to end.

December gets busy fast. If you wait until January to think about your 2026 taxes, some planning opportunities may already be off the table.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act changed several business tax rules. Before December 31, it’s worth reviewing:

• Equipment purchases: Bonus depreciation and Section 179 may allow eligible assets to be deducted sooner, but timing, eligibility, and your cash flow matter. The property generally needs to be placed in service by year-end.
• QBI deduction: Check whether your business may qualify and how income limits and other rules could affect the deduction.
• S corporation owner pay: Make sure payroll and reasonable compensation are being handled properly. Distributions don’t replace wages.

These choices depend on your business, tax situation, and current rules. A quick review now can help you understand your options before year-end, not after.

Own a law firm or an HVAC, electrical, or plumbing business in Maryland, DC, or Virginia? Reach out to book a year-end planning call. We’ll help you sort through the next steps with less guesswork.

Catch-up and clean-up bookkeeping may sound similar, but they solve different problems.

Many business owners use the two terms interchangeably, and it is easy to see why. Both involve getting your books into better shape. But knowing which one you actually need can save you time, money, and a lot of frustration, because the right fix starts with understanding what is really wrong.

Not sure what your books need? That is completely okay. A quick review is often all it takes to see whether you need a catch-up, a clean-up, or both, and what the best next step looks like.
