Retirement accounts, such as 401(k)s and IRAs, allow you to name beneficiaries who will receive the assets when you pass away. In most cases, these beneficiary designations override instructions in your will and allow the assets to pass directly to your named beneficiaries without going through probate.
That’s why it’s important to make sure you’ve named beneficiaries on all of your retirement accounts—and to review them regularly to ensure they’re still up to date.
