A little Friday thought for all the CEOs out there...

Every January scramble we have watched a business owner go through was avoidable back in October.

You know the version. It's late January, 1099s are due, and nobody has a current address or tax ID for half the contractors who got paid last year, so you're emailing people you haven't spoken to since June and hoping they get back to you before the deadline, and some of them won't.

The fix isn't complicated and it doesn't have to happen all at once. Pull the list of who you paid this year, check that you have a W9 on file for each one, and chase the few that are missing now, while it's still a small ask instead of an urgent one.

It's an hour in October or a week of stress in January, and since the deadline isn't moving either way, the timing is the only part of this you control. 🗓️

Every CEO has a short list of things they quietly avoid, and most of us have gotten very good at building our whole week around them.

LearningRx Brain Training CEO Kim Hanson has a different take, shaped by years of helping people strengthen the exact skills they struggle with most, and it might change how you look at your own blind spots.

Hear it on this week's episode of The CEO Shift at spadergroup.com/ceo-shift.

Shawndel spent the day at Kelly Lucente’s RE-MARKABILITY Summit, and she came back with a full page of notes and some great memories!

Getting out of the office and into a room full of people building things is good for a business, and it’s good for the people running one.

What does a CEO's week actually look like when it's built on purpose?

LearningRx Brain Training CEO Kim Hanson has a very specific answer, and it starts with a testimonial every Monday morning.

On this week's episode of The CEO Shift, Kim joins our CEO Shawndel to talk about taking the reins of the company her father founded, learning to lead herself before she could lead everyone else well, and the weekly rhythm that keeps the important things first.

The new episode is live at spadergroup.com/ceo-shift.

"Reconciliation" sounds like something complicated, and it isn't.

It just means we check your books against the bank statement itself and make sure the two of them tell the same story. ✅

When they don't match, something is missing or duplicated or recorded wrong, and catching that now is a small fix, while catching it next spring means you have spent months making decisions off a number that was never right.

"I'm profitable, so why is there nothing in my account?"

It's one of the most common questions we get, and the answer is that profit and cash are two different things happening on two different timelines.

📈 Profit is what you earned, so if you invoiced forty thousand in September, your P&L counts it in September whether or not anyone has paid you yet.

💵 Cash is what has landed in your account, which means a strong month on paper can still have half of it sitting in receivables waiting to come in.

Then there's everything that hits your bank account and never touches your P&L at all, like the principal portion of a loan payment, which isn't an expense, or owner draws, which come out of your cash rather than your profit, or a piece of equipment that leaves your account all at once and then shows up on your reports gradually over the years that follow.

None of that means your books are wrong. It means profit is telling you whether the business is working while cash is telling you whether you can cover payroll on Friday, and you need to be reading both of them. 📊

What if the thing slowing you down isn't a lack of effort but a skill nobody ever helped you strengthen?

Here's a sneak peek at next week's episode of The CEO Shift, where LearningRx Brain Training CEO Kim Hanson joins our CEO Shawndel to talk about brain training, leadership, and why the way most of us handle our weak spots may be holding us back.

Good news, CEOs!

Q4 just started, which means there's still three months to change how this year ends.

That's a very different position than finding out in December that something needs to change.

Three months is enough time to adjust pricing, chase down what's outstanding, or decide not to spend something!

Somewhere under the spreadsheets, the payroll, and the hard days is the version of you who started this business with a dream, and it is worth asking when you last checked in with them.

On the latest episode of The CEO Shift, Sarah Stokes, CEO of The Juicy Good Life shares the nine-minute exercise she has used for 15 years to help CEOs reconnect with where they are really headed, along with the client story that shows why it matters so much.
