Have you earned the money yet?

If the answer is no, it generally doesn't belong in your operating account yet.

Unearned fees are payments received for legal work that hasn't been completed. Until those fees are earned, they belong in trust.

It’s a simple distinction but an important one when it comes to trust accounting.
