Extending only extends the filing of your return. Any balance due is still due 4/15/26.

If your extension shows no balance due and you later owe, the IRS can invalidate the extension. See a professional to estimate your balance due and pay by 4/15/26.

More IRS notices sent in error...

There has been a rash of taxpayers receiving a notice from the IRS the last few weeks labeled CP59SN. In this notice, it says the IRS does not have a tax return on file for 2024, even though the taxpayer has a valid extension allowing them until October 15,2025 to file.

If you have received one of these notices, the important thing to remember is not to panic. If you have filed an extension and have proof of filing and/or proof of the IRS acceptance (if filed electronically), there is no action that needs to be taken except to file your return by the extended due date of October 15th.

If you did not file an extension, you should work on getting your tax return filed as soon as possible to avoid possibly penalties and interest continuing to accrue should there be a balance due.
