A beneficiary is who receives your assets when you pass away, and if set up correctly, those assets can avoid probate and go directly to your loved ones.

Make sure your life insurance, retirement accounts, bank accounts, and investments all have updated beneficiaries.

And if you have a trust, don’t forget—you must transfer your assets into it. Otherwise, it doesn’t work the way you intended.
