And just like that, the 2026 IRS Nationwide Tax Forum in New York City has come to an end, and I’m headed back home to Chocolatetown, USA with a notebook full of information, plenty of new resources, and even more ideas for how to better serve my clients at AAMS Inc. 🍫🗽
This is one of my favorite continuing education events because for three full days, I get to completely nerd out on TAXES with people who actually speak my language! 😂 And this year there was certainly plenty to talk about.
A big focus was the tax law changes for 2026 and the One Big Beautiful Bill, including changes that will affect individuals, families, employees, and small business owners. We dug into the new deductions, Qualified Business Income updates, changes coming to tax forms, and what taxpayers and preparers need to be thinking about now instead of waiting until filing season.
I also spent extra time learning about the IRS’s expanding Online Account and digital services. The IRS continues to move more taxpayer services online, and I’m excited to help my clients get their accounts established and learn how to actually USE these tools. There are more ways to access information, track activity, work with tax professionals, and handle certain IRS matters digitally, and knowing where to find things can make dealing with the IRS a whole lot less intimidating.
Then came some of the sessions that make tax law especially interesting…
We had some rousing conversations about NIL, performers, influencers and social media income and the tax responsibilities that come along with making money in this rapidly changing world. If your teenager, college student, athlete, content creator or side-hustling adult starts receiving money, products, sponsorships or other compensation, there may be tax consequences long before anyone thinks of themselves as owning a “business.”
We also dove into exiting corporations and some of the complicated tax situations that can arise when corporations own real estate or other appreciated property. How something is structured on the way INTO a business can make an enormous difference when you eventually want to get it OUT. Those are the kinds of conversations I love having with business owners before a major decision is made.
And, of course, there were plenty of real-life examples, Tax Court cases, “you wouldn’t believe what happened next” stories, compliance discussions and reminders that in tax… the details really do matter.
That is ultimately why I continue to invest the time and money into education like this year after year.
Tax preparation isn’t just putting numbers into boxes on a form.
It’s understanding why the number belongs there, knowing what questions to ask, recognizing when something doesn’t look right, understanding how changing tax law affects the person sitting across from me, and helping clients make informed decisions before those decisions become expensive tax problems.
After doing this since 2009, I still learn something new every single year…and I hope I always will.
So I’m leaving New York with a very full tax brain, a stack of notes and resources to organize, and a renewed excitement for helping my clients navigate another year of changes.
Whether you’ve been an AAMS client for years, haven’t checked in with me for a while, or you’re a small business owner or individual looking for someone who will sit down and explain taxes to you in plain English, my door is open.
Now…back to Chocolatetown, USA and back to work. 🍫❤️
