Retirees are on the move, and one familiar destination is noticeably absent from the top five.

In the 2025 and 2026 year-to-date migration trends Joe reviewed, South Carolina ranked first among states attracting retirees, followed by Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina and Arizona. Meanwhile, California, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts and New Jersey led the list of states retirees are leaving.

But taxes alone don’t explain the movement. Housing prices, insurance premiums, healthcare access and lifestyle costs can all affect how far retirement income stretches.

When choosing where to retire, which trade-off would you rather make?

A. Live in a state with no state income tax, knowing housing and insurance may cost more.

B. Live in a state with an income tax, but potentially benefit from more affordable housing and everyday expenses.

There isn’t one right answer. The better fit depends on how the state treats your income, the type of home you want, insurance costs, healthcare access and the lifestyle you’re planning.
