For those who had to do a short sale in the current year and/or are thinking about doing one to close during the 2016 year the Principal Residence Indebtedness Exclusion has been extended.

Exclusion of Discharge of Principal Residence Indebtedness
Typically, forgiven debt is considered taxable income in the eyes of the IRS; however, this tax provision has been extended through 2016, allowing homeowners whose homes have been foreclosed on or subjected to short sale to exclude up to $2 million of canceled mortgage debt. Also included are taxpayers seeking debt modification on their home.

This means that the amount forgiven by the bank at the time of short sale to which you receive a 1099C form can be excluded from your income. If you have such a situation and have any questions please contact me directly.

IMPORTANT REMINDER:
APRIL 15TH DEADLINE IS APPROACHING -- If you are filing your return on extension remember that this is not a way to extend paying your taxes. If you are going to owe taxes you must estimate your tax bill with the information you have and pay your taxes due by this due date to avoid penalties and/or interest to your tax account.

APRIL 30th -- Payroll Taxes & Returns are Due!!

MAY 15th -- Federal & State Withholding Remittance Payments are due if you are a monthly depositor as well as all SS & Medicare withheld + Company Match.

Don't forget that April 18, 2011 is the tax filing deadline. Make sure all tax returns are either filed or extended by that date and that all taxes due are paid to the appropriate taxing authorities.
