Every year, a few business owners come to see me in March with a box of receipts and a hopeful look.

I hate being the one to tell them this: by March, the year is closed. Whatever we could have done needed to happen in September, October, or November.

Three things are non-negotiable when you own a business:

• Monthly bookkeeping, so your numbers are accurate.
• Quarterly tax projections, so your estimated payments are not a guess.
• A year-end review in November, while you still have choices—not in February, when you are simply reporting what already happened.

Bookkeeping does not just tell you where your business has been. Done correctly and on time, it shows you where your business is headed while there is still time to change direction.

Do not wait until tax season to find out where you stand.

Schedule a 15-minute call with Belshaw Accounting to review your bookkeeping, tax readiness, and next steps.

Finding out what you owe in April isn’t tax planning. It’s a receipt. 🧾
By the time the year is over, most of the moves that could have lowered your tax bill are already gone. Real tax planning happens during the year—while you still have choices.

I’ve been doing this since 1978, and here’s what I know: the people who sleep well during tax season are the ones we talked to in the summer, not the ones who called in April.

Good surprises only. Want to get ahead of yours? Grab 15 minutes with me—no prep, no pressure.

📢 Small business owners — quick tax heads-up.
The IRS bumped the standard business mileage rate up TWICE this year to keep up with fuel costs:
🚗 January–June 2026: 72.5¢ per mile
🚗 July–December 2026: 76¢ per mile
What this means: at tax time, you can't just multiply total miles by one rate. Split your log by date and apply 72.5¢ to first-half miles and 76¢ to second-half miles.
A little bookkeeping now = a bigger, accurate deduction later. And if you reimburse employees for driving, update your rate for the rest of the year.

💵 Do you earn tips? A new federal tax deduction could help you keep more of what you earned.

For the 2025 tax year, eligible workers in tipped occupations may be able to deduct up to $25,000 in qualified tip income from their federal taxable income. However, the deduction has specific eligibility, income, reporting, and documentation requirements—and your W-2 may not show everything you need.

Our latest article explains what tipped workers in Pasco County should know, which records to gather, and how the rules are changing for 2026.
